One of the vanishingly few traditional pie ’n’ mash dynasties left in London, four generations of Goddards have run the family business since 1890. “Always friendly to regulars and tourists alike”, they offer a “good choice of pies”, from the standard beef mince to a vegan option.

“Pie ’n’ mash is now fashionable” (as reported in GQ magazine) “and the grandkids love it”. This “very friendly” outlet near Greenwich Park from the Goddard family – one of London’s traditional pie-shop dynasties – is a good place to try the capital’s original fast food, with some updates on the menu to offer more choice.

“Pies & liquor, pies & gravy – both are excellent” – this traditional pie ’n’ mash house near Greenwich Park was established in 1890, although its menu has moved with the times to incorporate steak, chicken, lamb and vegetarian recipes. “Wonderful counter service” downstairs, or eat with views in the grander first-floor dining room.

“Crammed with tourists and locals every lunchtime, getting a taste of history”, this “genuine and friendly” Greenwich fixture is one of the last purveyors of traditional pie ’n’ mash left in London. The “pies haven’t changed since 1890” – although they do now offer a veggie version with soya.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Food was alright but nothing special. It's a cafe really and has a good, honest, worn feel about it. Very busy for a Wednesday lunchtime."
