“A real winner”“fine, inventive dishes” make it worth knowing about Dayashakar Sharmer’s Indian in the ’burbs of West Dulwich: a cut-above, both for its location and by the standards of modern local curry houses.

“Just amazing food bursting with flavour… and in generous portions” inspires very enthusiastic reports for Dayashakar Sharmar’s ambitious Dulwich Indian – “it’s so good for a local!” – and its small-but-dedicated fan club travel from across south east London.

This “impressive newcomer to the usually disappointing Dulwich food scene” arrived with a top pedigree for “high-class, high-taste” Indian cuisine under chef Dayashankar Sharma, a veteran of Tamarind, Zaika and Grand Trunk Road. The Guardian’s Grace Dent was an early champion – “by rights it should become a south London classic” – but ratings are capped by one or two locals who feel it’s “OK but not worth the hype”.

“Inspired modern Indian cuisine from chef Dayashankar Sharma, formerly of the Grand Trunk Road” wins strong praise for this brave, January 2021 opening in West Dulwich. The regional small plates are hailed as “top-quality”“the whole menu was inventive and it was difficult to pick what to eat” – as are the Indian-inspired cocktails. “Service is friendly and lovely, too” (“the GM and the chef came to say hi”) and “it has a really buzzy atmosphere”. “So happy that it has landed on my doorstep”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
