Don’t run a mile from the plastic life-size Mexican guarding the door to this basic cantina in a grungy corner of Surrey Quays, if you want to discover its “top-notch, authentic Mexican dishes”, and in particular “excellent tacos”. The odd aficionado of Latino fare crosses town for this place. (There’s also a branch near Euston at 160 Eversholt Street).

This “surprisingly good Mexican café in the back of nowhere” – well, deepest Surrey Quays – even imports soft drinks from Mexico for added authenticity. Top Menu Tip – “the prawn tacos are great – crispy, juicy and they come with a fiery salsa”.

“Simple dishes are well-realised” at this basic Mexican, which has moved from its previous site (a take-away with a few seats at the counter) to this (marginally grander) former caff nearby in Surrey Quays.

If you live in Surrey Quays – or go bonkers for Mexican cuisine – consider a diversion to this small hole in the wall (take away and just a few stools). The pay-off is particularly authentic tacos, tortillas and other Mexican scoff: one early report says it’s “outstanding” and The Standard’s Jimi Famurewa said it was ‘One of the most exhilarating food discoveries of the year’.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
