Harden's says
Star Portuguese chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, who trained in London almost 30 years ago, has made his return to the capital with the opening of a new high-rise restaurant in the Battersea Power Station development; his 15th-floor Iberian restaurant "with its own bar on the floor below as well as a rooftop bar with an infinity pool), is part of the new art’otel design by Foster + Partners; opened February 2023.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“A beautiful room overlooking the Power Station” – the 16th-floor flagship restaurant at Battersea’s new art’otel showcases “classic Portuguese dishes” from chef Henrique Sá Pessoa of Lisbon hotspot Alma. A year on from its opening, there is the odd doubter who feels “they charge too much money… the best part is the view”; but most reports say it “truly delivers on both taste and ambience”.
Summary
“You feel like you’re on the set of Blade Runner next to the floor-to-ceiling windows” of this striking newcomer on the 16th floor of the new Battersea art’otel, with gobsmacking sightlines over the top of the power station and of the London skyline. Fêted Portuguese chef, Henrique Sá Pessoa, provides a not-unaffordable selection of tapas, petiscos, tortilla, grills (from the Josper) and a few large plates. Our reporters were generally more enthusiastic than The Standard’s Jimi Famurewa (whose food “lurched, haphazardly, from forgettably luxe to clumsily experimental”), referencing “classic Portuguese dishes, all executed with impeccable attention to detail”. But one reporter did feel their meal was only “fine… like JimFam we were thinking of the much more interesting and better value menu at Lisboeta”. Top Tip – dip your toe in the water by “heading to the rooftop bar next door which has stunning views: order some drinks and nibble on small plates”.
Summary
If you’re of a certain age, your reading may have been punctuated since the 1980s with visuals in national newspapers of how a skyline bar/restaurant at the forever-about-to-be-redeveloped Battersea Power Station might look. Well, it’s finally a reality! Portuguese chef Henrique Sá Pessoa will open these three distinct spaces – a 15th floor restaurant; a bar on the 14th floor; and a rooftop bar with infinity pool – as part of the new art’otel in the development. Sá Pessoa’s existing interests include his two Michelin star Alma back home in his native Lisbon and acting as exec chef to art’otel Amsterdam. Authentic Portuguese and Catalonian cuisine is promised alongside other dishes of Iberian inspiration, with numerous items finished tableside for a bit of added glam.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
