If you’re a fan of ’70s ‘Dad Rock’ then chances are your vinyl collection includes disks recorded at this legendary Barnes studios – nowadays converted into an indie cinema, restaurant and funky (for Barnes) members club. Foodwise, it’s a “useful” all-day operation, benefiting from its prime position on the main drag of Barnes, and a wide pavement terrace that catches the summer sun. Perhaps that makes it complacent: the brasserie fare is too often mightily ordinary.

For “Barnes at brunch” – or as a “very useful and convenient place to eat before a film” – the “family-friendly” dining room in the “nice surroundings” of Barnes’s iconic recording-studio- turned-indie-cinema “serves its purpose” (and the outdoor terrace further adds to its appeal as a social hub in decent weather). But the menu is “disappointingly limited and dull, even if pretty well executed”.

“Barnes at brunch” is to be found at this “family-friendly” brasserie, on the ground floor of a complex created from legendary recording studios (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Ella Fitzgerald, Madonna, Prince… the list goes on) and which also incorporates an indie cinema and “very cool” members’ bar. Fans say you get “decent food at reasonable prices” here at any time. Sceptics that “it has nice surroundings, but a limited and dull menu, which is pretty well executed, but just serves a purpose, nothing more”.

“Brunch takes some beating” at this casual all-day brasserie, which is attached to the legendary recording studios-turned-indie cinema that has become a favoured hangout amongst well-heeled Barnes residents. It has a “great terraced outdoor area” and the “members-only bar is uber-cool”. “Afternoon tea with all the trimmings looks very good and tastes ... almost as good as it looks” – while the main menu “almost never changes, and is a bit boring”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
