“Top-class cooking” has earned a strong reputation for this three-year-old Indian in East Sheen – a spinoff from the brilliant Dastaan in Ewell, and similarly belying its “pedestrian” interior. A few reports this year, though, suggest success risks going to their heads a little (“a return visit and still worth the trip, but bills have risen – please don’t price yourself out of the game!”). Top Tip – “the pork cheek vindaloo and the soft-shell crab remain things of beauty”.

“Oh, you lucky punters of East Sheen… rejoice!” – this “unexpected” two-year-old is a spin-off from Ewell’s legendary Dastaan, and is praised in numerous reports for chef Manish Sharma’s “extraordinary Indian cuisine at fair prices”: “big, complex punches of flavour but all nicely balanced”. On the downside, ratings are capped by the odd reporter who feels it’s “OK, but not quite as good as its reviews and reputation would suggest”.

“Oh, the lucky punters of East Sheen!” – this suburban yearling is “more convenient than Dastaan in Ewell” (its legendary elder sibling) but has become a similar must-visit for those serious about ticking off London’s best Indians. Manish Sharma’s “very classy” cooking is “some of the best ever” according to some reports, with “very subtle spicing and very good quality ingredients… amazing”. “Bravo!” Top Menu Tips – the lamb chops and chilli garlic tiger prawns.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"A return visit and still worth the trip. Prices have risen and the service is more perfunctory but the Pork Cheek Vindaloo and the Soft-Shell crab remain things of beauty. Long may it continue but please don’t price yourself out of the game."
