“The food is exceptional” from a monthly changing menu at this three-year-old independent in Wimbledon Village, owned by “talented young chef” Toby Cartwright, who is supported well by a “knowledgeable front of house team”. Most of the restaurant’s fan club are local, but they feel it deserves wider recognition.

“Super food, inventiveness and friendly staff – and it’s local!” – this Wimbledon Village two-year-old wins raves from locals who feel they don’t have to step out of their hood to eat top-notch cuisine. Young chef Toby Cartwright (who trained at Coworth Park under John Campbell) offers a no-choice set meal only, so his team can get the best out of special ingredients – which is fine, since “every dish balances different elements perfectly, and the personal service is exceptional”. Its closest nearby rival is White Onion, round the corner in the High Street: is a theme developing?

“No choice, but it doesn’t matter as everything is delicious” – on weekend evenings there’s only a five-course tasting option available at this Wimbledon Village yearling, and at other services choice is very limited: but judging by the high marks awarded by its local fanclub, no-one minds (in contrast to The Evening Standard’s Fay Maschler, who panned the place).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
