The Gladwin Brothers' neighbourhood restaurant in the heart of Wimbledon Village.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“It’s good to have an independent option in Wimbledon village” and for the most part, this two year-old venture from the Gladwin family – their fifth shabby-chic London venue – is welcomed as “a decent venue in the culinary wasteland of the area”; and it espouses their ‘Wild & Local’ ethos, with “locally sourced and seasonally driven food”. Notwithstanding the odd unfavourable comparison with its predecessor The White Onion (RIP), its scores are reasonable across the board.
Summary
“The cooking is interesting, vegetable heavy, but accessible to all”, say fans of the Gladwin family’s field-to-fork yearling (supplied by their Sussex farm), which has proved to be one of their more commented-on recent openings. But even those who feel it’s “a great addition to the dining choices in Wimbledon Village” say “the food is perhaps not always as good as they think it is (some portions are tiny)”. And it does also attract one or two really harsh critiques: “as a replacement for The White Onion (RIP) – an outstanding local – The Black Lamb is a disappointment and can be totally lacking in atmosphere”.
Summary
Wimbledon’s White Onion (RIP) has gone from the Village high street, to make way for the Gladwin family’s 6th London opening in their Sussex-based business’s field-to-fork empire, a ‘countryside-luxe’ take on British food, together with wines from the family’s ‘Nutbourne’ vineyard. An early doors July 2022 review here by The Evening Standard’s Jimi Famurewa echoed the mixed reports our survey sometimes throws up regarding the Gladwin chain: he accused it of being “afflicted by a kind of well-meaning mediocrity”, delivering a “playful spin on… quintessentially British flavour combinations… devoid of the requisite skilled execution”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
