Harden's says
The arrival of Sally Abé from Fulham’s stellar Harwood Arms has majorly upped the cred of this recently relaunched (December 2020) pub-restaurant – one of four eateries set to open in a newly refurbished Westminster hotel. In line with her time in Fulham, Sunday roasts will be a big feature, as will Scotch eggs and other ribsticking British fare.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“It’s a lovely surprise that Sally Abé has moved to the Conrad St James and opened both a restaurant (The Pem, see also) and this pub, as the area has been a gastronomic desert for some time” and it’s undoubtedly a boon to local politicos and lobbyists. But with its spacious layout and leather bucket chairs, it’s rather plush by pub standards and prices are not those of your local boozer (cod ’n’ chips is £24, a sausage roll £12). Fans say it’s “really enjoyable” but there are also one or two ‘off’ reports.
Summary
This stab at a ‘modern British pub’ from a posh Westminster hotel has not really convinced reporters, despite the appointment of high-profile chef, Sally Abé, from Fulham’s brilliant Harwood Arms (she also runs the hotel’s flagship restaurant, The Pem). “There isn’t a lot of choice round this way” but BB is “expensive for what it is and full of a combination of mid-ranking politicians and journalists” – ouch!
Summary
This ‘modern take on the British pub’ with food by chef Sally Abé, formerly of the stellar Harwood Arms, is “part of the huge improvement of the City of Westminster’s offering over the last few years”. “The food is good, particularly the meat” – but calling it a ‘pub’ can feel like “a hopeless misnomer” (“it is a hotel restaurant with formal service – OK, no tablecloths – but waiters standing to attention”) and at quiet times it can lack atmosphere.
Summary
The arrival of Sally Abé from Fulham’s stellar Harwood Arms has majorly upped the cred of this recently relaunched pub-restaurant – one of four eateries set to open in summer 2021 in a newly refurbished Westminster hotel (see also The Pem). In line with her time in Fulham, Sunday roasts are a big feature, as are Scotch eggs and other ribsticking British fare. Some early feedback is positive, but too limited for a rating.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
