Harden's says

On the site that was formerly The Rectory - and before that, The Calf - a fourth pub from the team behind Smokehouse, The Pig & Butcher and The Princess of Shoreditch; there's a daily changing menu and a sustainability-led approach here, with upcycled fixtures, an on-site butchery and drinks from small-batch UK producers.

With its “top-notch, meat-focused food, warm and friendly service” and “great rustic dining room”, this “magnificent old boozer in Clapham Old Town” is “lovely to have as a local but also worth a trip to visit”; even if there is the odd concern that “it doesn’t know whether it wants to be a restaurant or a pub”. It’s from the team behind Islington’s Smokehouse and the Princess of Shoreditch, who took over three years ago.

This two-year-old conversion of a “grand old barn of a tavern in Clapham” into a “beautiful city-rustic gastropub with very good food” has been a real success for the team behind Smokehouse and the Princess of Shoreditch. “So happy to have a local worth staying near home for”, purr fans of its “meat-friendly menu that’s packed with flavour”. “Wide veggie options available”, too.

“A great conversion of a big old pub in Clapham” – this November 2021 newcomer is the fourth site of the team behind Smokehouse, The Pig & Butcher and The Princess of Shoreditch. It’s a “stylish and high-spec” renovation to create a buzzy attractive space over two levels. The main area is “a bit of a noisy barn”“the mezzanine (with views to the kitchen) is the more interesting/quieter area foodwise”. The menu has a sustainability focus (“the more ‘unfashionable’ meats: bone marrow, pig’s head, mutton”), but at the overview it “serves up really well-cooked British pub dining”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
