In the thin area near Oval tube, this neighbourhood bistro is worth remembering. A sibling to Knife in Clapham, its “old-fashioned modern British cooking” puts a similar emphasis on steak and other grills, but there’s a good selection of dishes and – albeit on limited feedback – it wins praise for “excellent all-round value”.

‘Old-fashioned, modern British cooking’ is the promise at this “very enjoyable” bistro near Oval tube – sister restaurant to Clapham’s Knife and with a menu that similarly makes a feature of both top steaks and Sunday lunch.

“This relaxed upmarket bistro delivers excellent cuisine with style” in a pocket of South London that has lacked cooking of any ambition. There’s “always a buzz about the place”, which is a partnership between successful operators down the road in Clapham – Andrew and Kelsey Bradford of Knife steakhouse and Matt Wells, co-owner of The Dairy.

“Finally a great neighbourhood restaurant in Oval!”“a parched part of London where average offerings abound” – this bistro yearling comes courtesy of Matt Wells (co-owner of The Dairy, Clapham) and Andrew Bradford (from SW4 steakhouse, Knife). A modern bistro-type place, with the benefit of an outside terrace, it provides an “exciting” modern British menu and there’s a “committed team making it all happen”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
