Harden's survey result
Summary
Kurt Zdesar’s “loud and dark” haunts promise a culinary journey from Tokyo to Lima with some “brill cocktails” thrown in. It’s “great fun” and the Nikkei food is an “interesting fusion” too, if also a pricey one. Since 2022, the London presence has doubled with the addition of a Marylebone branch to join the first Soho one. It also has six siblings in North America and a couple in the Middle East.
Summary
Loud and lively late-night Nikkei (Peruvian-Japanese fusion) haunt that’s “a great spot for watching Soho” – and the food is “awesome” too. “You have to book in advance because it’s usually very full”. For a more wallet-friendly option earlier in the day, order a bento box with “a little bit of everything – highly recommended”. In September 2021 the brand announced a second branch in Marylebone Village, to open in January 2022.
Summary
“Exquisite food and cocktails” – “an amazing blend of flavours danced across my tongue!” – and “a great vibe (particularly for late-night dining)” help make this Japanese-Peruvian fusion haunt in Soho a “fun and buzzy” (if “loud”, especially when the music’s cranked up) destination for a night on the tiles.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Chotto Matte Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Wonderful food, such interesting flavours, a warm greeting on arrival and excellent service. Elegant and smart interiors, beautifully low lit and comfortable. I really enjoyed the food - loved the fusion flavours. But I think I am the wrong demographic for Chotto Matte as it was more like eating in a dance club. The music was far too loud for me, but I recognise I’m in a minority where most people, these days it seems, consider this to be atmospheric (I prefer restaurants where they play no music or it's very quiet). Also difficult to get away with much less that £130 per head, and we had only 1 bottle of wine between us, therefore I feel its was over priced. "
"We enjoyed the Peruvian/Japanese food. We had 3 x pre theatre menus at £40 each. Two 175ml glasses of white wine at £23.10. Total cost including 15% service charge was £177. Not cheap but the food was good. The highlight for the girls was the ladies loo and they came back with loads of photos."
"Lived up to expectations and hugely enjoyed the experience. The food was exceptionally good. Access to the hip loos was a challenge until I found the right button to press! Nearly too late!!"
"Nicely prepared creative flavorful fusion of Peruvian and Japanese. Atmosphere probably would have been buzzy and fun on another day but was fairly flat on Sunday evening. Service simply atrocious - order glass of wine did not arrive until we reminded 15 minutes (no apology); had to beg for pudding menu; bill included 4 items from another table…. "
