Harden's survey result
Summary
“An upmarket but wonderfully understated local without pretensions” that’s “just 10 minutes’ walk from Oxford Circus”. Will Lander and Daniel Morgenthau’s well-regarded – if “fairly cramped and noisy” – Fitzrovia corner site wins continues to win support with its “very competent, modern British cooking”, “varied international wine list, with many options by the glass”, and “staff who are friendly and passionate about what they serve”. Is it the cost of living crisis though? – “rather small portions” is a repeat complaint this year. Top Tip – “great value lunch with an (always) interesting menu”.
Summary
“Rocking something reminiscent of an upscale NYC-style neighbourhood vibe (a real triumph in the context of central London)” – Will Lander and Daniel Morgenthau’s “unpretentious, relaxed and happy” corner site in Fitzrovia “keeps up very high standards”: “the menu is always original”, service is “charming”, there’s an “interesting wine list” and a “noisy buzzy atmosphere”. It can be slightly “erratic” though, and arguably “in being rather cramped, it needs to get off the fence and either up the party mood, or space the tables and quieten down a little”.
Summary
“Assured and friendly service” is a particular plus at Will Lander and Daniel Morgenthau’s “low-key” but engaging corner site in Fitzrovia, whose “informal” but professional approach suits it to a simple business lunch but also to a “perfect, relaxed and unstuffy” meal with friends. There was the odd quibble about creeping prices this year, but practically all reports are of “inventive and surprising” cuisine that’s “always seasonal, unpretentious and utterly delicious”. Interesting wine options too (including reasonable corkage and the option to purchase and take home).
Summary
“Not at all what you would expect from the outside!” – “fabulous flavours and clever cooking abound” at Will Lander and Daniel Morgenthau’s “highly sophisticated” neighbourhood venture, whose understatedly hip premises occupy a deceptively humble-looking corner-site in Fitzrovia. It also features an “exceptional and interesting wine list by glass: I go online after to see what wines I should be buying at home!”
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
