“Consistent, tasty, dependable” food at a “price-point that’s pretty competitive given its Mayfair location” is the deal at this Shepherd Market outfit named after an 18th-century courtesan. At almost 10 years old, the excitement it generated at launch has diminished, although fans reckon it “continues to excel” as both “a business destination with character” and “a romantic and atmospheric” spot.

This “very small, charming and romantic” venture in Shepherd Market was briefly the hottest ticket in town in the mid noughties (providing a much-PR’d date night for David & Samantha Cameron). Nowadays, those who remember the historic hype can find it “overrated” or “dependable rather than… wow!”, but overall its food is well-rated. Top Menu Tip – Belted Galloway Wing Rib and “cosmic crispy potatoes!”

This “romantic destination restaurant” – named after an 18th-century courtesan remembered in a nursery rhyme – makes the most of its location in Mayfair’s cute-but-seedy Shepherd Market. “Cramped, yes; too noisy, yes; too close to the Bunch of Grapes, yes; sometimes hard to get into, yes; but very fine food, the most charming front of house team, and an atmosphere that is intimate but animated”. Top Tip: “how they get their crispy potatoes to taste like that is beyond me – one portion is never enough”.

Named after an 18th-century courtesan, this “cosy” haunt “has real character”, while “the seediness of Mayfair’s Shepherd Market at night makes it romantic”. “Food and service are delightful and consistent”, but even so, these days it struggles to live up to the wave of hype generated at its launch, and – judged comparatively – “it’s not as good as when Tomos Parry (now at Brat in Shoreditch) was head chef”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
