“High-quality noodles with spicy toppings from nuclear-grade down to wimp” is the draw to this first floor canteen in Kingly Court, Carnaby – the first permanent venue for Chongqing natives Liu Qian & Charlene Liu, whose noodles in hot broth and other specialities from central-western China have been a big hit on the supperclub circuit. “Do a couple of things really well seems to be the ethos here” and the “basic menu is delicious and filling”. All this plus “speedy service and simple decor make for a satisfying time”. (In March 2024, The Times’s Charlotte Ivers confessed her new-found addiction to the mouth-numbing flavours here: “it is no exaggeration to say I have thought of these dumplings every day since…”).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"A good place for spicy food ; you can choose your own degree of hotness. Reasonable prices for decent food."

"Do a couple of things really well is the ethos here. High quality noodles with spicing graded from nuclear down to wimp (they phrase it more politely). "Mild" has plenty kick enough for those who think a high street curry is spiced enough. Home made won tons melt in the mouth. speedy service, simple decor make for satisfying time. "

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

The Times

Charlotte Ivers confessed her new-found addiction to the mouth-numbing flavours of Chongqing, to which she has returned three times at this new restaurant off Regent Street, in Kingly Court.

“One bite and your whole mouth is tingling and sensitive”, she says of the “novel delight” of tasting its wontons and broth for the first time. “It is no exaggeration to say I have thought of these dumplings every day since.”

Xiaomian means little noodles and they are, Charlotte says, “perhaps the best noodles I have had in my life. On the way home I walk past a ramen restaurant and feel sad for everyone inside.”
