Harden's says
Chef Rishim Sachdeva's highly rated "mostly vegan" pop-up in Princes Street, off Regent Street in Mayfair, becomes a permanent venue following a short closure to allow for a refurb in summer 2023. The "mostly" designation allows the occasional appearance of cheese on the menu – but there's no meat.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“Rishim Sachdeva’s ‘mostly’ vegan food is consistently thrilling in its creativity, ingenuity and presentation” and long-time supporters welcome his graduation from a pop-up to this permanent site in July 2023 near Oxford Circus. Rishim “magically roams the globe drawing from many cuisines which somehow harmonise”. The “smart (for a vegan restaurant)” interior mostly pleases, but “can perhaps seem a little hard-edged at times”, but fans say “I would enjoy Rishim’s food on a bed of nails – it is brilliant!”
Summary
The “interesting, unusual” and “occasionally really great” vegan cuisine at this “romantic and candle-lit restaurant close to Oxford Circus” has won enough fans to crowdfund its transformation from pop-up to permanent status at the same address. “The best test is that it continues to attract non-vegetarians because the food is so good”. Former Fat Duck and Chiltern Firehouse chef Rishim Sachdeva was a committed meat-eater before challenging himself to create knock-out veggie dishes (with some cheese permitted).
Summary
“Wow. Who would believe it? A vegan restaurant that’s amazing” – Rishim Sachdeva (ex-Fat Duck and Chiltern Firehouse) was a ‘hard-core carnivore’ until he challenged himself to see if he could create plant-based dishes that would satisfy himself as both a meat-eater and a chef. The answer was ‘yes’, the experiment changed his life, and he has spent three years doing pop-ups and residencies – most recently at a handy site just off Regent Street – while crowdfunding to raise capital for a permanent site. He has also gained a body of fans who have “visited several times for the unusual combinations and elevated vegan plates”, which represent “superb value for money”. Note – technically, Tendril is “mostly vegan”, with cheese making an occasional guest appearance.
Summary
Celebrating his journey from ‘hardcore carnivore’ to committed vegetarian, Rishim Sachdeva (whose CV includes Chiltern Firehouse and The Dairy) launched this ‘mostly vegan’ Indian as a 2021 residency in Soho’s well-known Sun & 13 Cantons pub. Next stop is a permanent HQ, which is aimed for at the end of 2021 or in 2022.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
