“Taking Greek tapas to another level” – this “intimate” Soho ‘gastrobar’ is named for ‘wine’ in ancient Greek, and part of the ‘Funky Gourmet’ group who own Opso (see also) as well as a Michelin two-star operation in Athens. Even some fans who find the cooking exceptional can caution that “the small and trendy location boosts costs, while multiple dishes also help tot up the bill”.

One or two “outstanding” reports inspire interest in this modern Greek off Soho’s Carnaby Street, whose name means ‘wine’ in ancient Greek (there’s an all-Hellenic list), and where the menu focus is on plates from the charcoal grill. (It’s from the team behind Opso, who also run the two-Michelin-star Funky Gourmet in Athens). Our rating errs on the conservative side, but we still don’t get as many reports on the place as we would like. Top Tip – very good value set lunch.

Summary

There are still too few reports to give a rating to this Greek ‘gastrobar’ in Soho, but it looks promising, with a combination of interesting Greek wines (the name derives from the Ancient Greek word for wine); cocktails from the barrel; and charcoal-grilled plates – they even finish their spanakopita pies on the grill. It is from the team behind well-rated Opso and avant-garde Athens restaurant Funky Gourmet.

Summary

From the team behind the well-rated Opso (and in Athens, Michelin two-star Funky Gourmet), this tiny, new (May 2021) Greek ‘gastrobar’ in Soho aims to combine modern Greek small plates – many of them cooked over the ‘psistaria’ (charcoal grill) – with Hellenic wines and cocktails. Seating incorporates a counter looking onto the narrow open kitchen. It opened too late for survey feedback, but Felicity Capon of The Week declared it “noisy, hot, full of life and vitality, offering superb and generous small plates designed to share” and showing “real pride and passion” in their preparation.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
