Harden's survey result
Summary
With its wizard sushi and Nikkei dishes, this Marylebone four-year-old from Nobu Matsuhisa still earns impressive ratings – a strong performance for a global restaurateur who was at the height of fashion 25 years ago, and still works 9am-11pm at the age of 75. “The specials menu in addition to the classics sets them apart from the Roka/Zuma scene” – although even fans complain about “OTT prices”. The restaurant is attached to a hotel launched under the Nobu Hotel brand spun out successfully around the world in the past decade.
Summary
Nobu Matsuhisa’s Marylebone three-year-old is higher-rated but less well-known than the original Nobu in Park Lane. Decor-wise, it’s more modern in style. Food-wise, it purveys the same, wizard Japanese-fusion cuisine for which the brand is internationally famous: most notably mesmerising sushi plus sensational signature dishes such as Black Cod. Practically all reports acknowledge the essential trade-off here: “it really cannot be beaten for deliciousness… but boy do you pay for it!”
Summary
“More modern in style than its older Park Lane sister and far more trendy now” – this “large, dark and warmly” decorated venue, with outside terrace, beamed down into this latest outpost of the international chain in December 2020. But while “popular and packed”, with Japanese-fusion cuisine that’s often rated as “wonderful”, it’s “an expensive option compared with other Japanese venues” and “the food isn’t quite as good as the original at The Met”.
Summary
Almost as soon as the Berkeley Street branch of Nobu shut, the luxury brand opened its second London hotel (with 249 rooms) in December 2020: this time on the corner of Portman Square (in a swankily refurbished former Radisson Blu). Selling points include a soaring entrance hall, its bar with outside terrace, and one of its famous restaurants. Early reports (“still brilliant”, “stylish, overpriced, but lovely”) cast it in the same good-but-pricey mould as its stablemates, for wizard Japanese-fusion delicacies (black cod, yada yada). Initial support for the ambience and service, though, is lukewarm.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
