Part of the luxe international chain of the star French chef, who passed away five years ago: this Mayfair yearling took over the site of the more casual ‘Comptoir Robuchon’ and is a return to London for the ‘Atelier’ brand (whose former incarnation in Covent Garden closed five years ago). “The recent refurbishment has made the room much easier on the eye” and “it’s great to watch the immense care given to cooking even a humble dish” by the assembled brigade. Most reports, though, focus on value with a widespread feeling that “while the food is good, it is very expensive for what you get”. Perhaps the recent appointment of chef Qassim Bouhassoun will zhoosh it up a bit.

As Le Comptoir Robuchon (RIP), this Mayfair outpost of the famous French chef’s global empire (which opened after his death) has never been a huge talking point for the fooderati. This was despite it providing a “top gastronomic experience” combining a very elegant interior with traditional Gallic fare that’s “worth the price”. Now, from September 2023, it’s being re-jigged to sit under the group’s international, flagship ‘Atelier’ brand – so creating a successor to the erstwhile Covent Garden site of that name that closed in 2018. Chef Andrea Cofini will be at the stoves, and doubtless aiming to put it on a par with its siblings in Hong Kong, Miami, Taipei, Vegas and Geneva, each of which holds at least one Michelin star (and most two or three).

Summary

With its marble bar and banquette seating, this gracious venue (which originally opened as Le Comptoir Robuchon in late 2019) near Shepherd Market is the September 2023 London flagship for the late Joel Robuchon’s global luxury restaurant chain (Robuchon International). London has not had an ‘Atelier’ since 2019, since which time its number of ultra-luxe restaurants has increased, so it will be interesting to see if this latest upgrading of the site makes waves as the WC2 branch once did.

With the passing of Joel Robuchon and closure of Covent Garden’s L’Atelier de Robuchon (RIP), this newish (late 2019) Mayfair venture is the main London torch-bearer for this famous French gastronomic name (see also ‘Le Deli Robuchon’ on Piccadilly, but it’s of no huge culinary ambition). The dining room – with a gorgeous marble bar running down one side, and tables with banquette seating down the other – is very fine and grand and already winning fans as a prime “business” choice. The luxurious modern French dishes are of high quality, with many echoes of L’Atelier (but perhaps a little simpler and less expensive), and a good proportion of early reporters acclaim this as their best meal of the year.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"The dining room is elegant, with a long chef's counter and booth table seating. The meal began with an amuse bouche and an incredible bread basket. The bread was beautifully presented, consisting of five very well made bread. Some of the best bread from a restaurant in London. Starter of sea bream carpaccio was simple but effective, perfectly seasoned. Main of red mullet was also delicious, accompanied with Robuchon's signature pomme puree. The baked alaska dessert was flamed at the table for some theatre, and was very good. A trio of petit fours ended the meal. Service was excellent from start to finish. All in all, a very good restaurant in Mayfair, worthy of a Michelin star. "
