“A new contemporary izakaya in Mayfair” set over two floors, which was opened a couple of years ago by Samyukta Nair and her family: “yes it’s pricey, but the atmosphere is banging and the food is varied and fun”. In June 2024, they decided to shake things up, rebranding the existing upstairs ‘Koyn Japanese’ and relaunching the newly refurbished downstairs space as ‘Koyn Thai’, with Bangkok-born chef Rose Chalalai Singh overseeing the existing Kiwi chef, Rhys Cattermoul.

Samyukta Nair and family’s ‘contemporary izakaya’ in Mayfair provides an evolved menu of sushi, tempura and robata dishes in a westernised style not dissimilar to that of Nobu or Roka, overseen by NZ-born chef Rhys Cattermoul. No-one has a bad word to say about the cooking, but there is the odd gripe about the size of the bill…

Summary

On gracious Grosvenor Square – a Japanese-inspired izakaya-style from Mei Mei’s Samyukta Nair; and her family’s LSL Capital’s fifth Mayfair venture; opening September 2022. The two-storey space is apparently inspired by ‘enigmatic’ Mount Fuji: ‘On the round floor is MIDORI, the green room, representative of vegetative life on the snow-capped peak, and below is MAGMA, the charred room, representing an active, bubbling volcano’. Who’d have guessed! A broad spectrum of Japanese cuisine is trailed, featuring specialist dishes in their sushi bar and robata grill selections.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
