Harden's says
Ivan and Manuela Wirth (the art world's famous couple behind Hauser + Wirth, and owners of The Fife Arms in Braemar) re-opened this large tavern in partnership with Fortnum & Mason's CEO Ewan Venters. Architect Luis Laplace, who designed and restored Roth Bar & Grill and Hauser & Wirth Somerset led the revamp of the five-storey building, including the restoration of many features lost during WWII. Opened in autumn 2022 - see also Mount Street Restaurant for the beautiful upstairs dining room.
Harden's survey result
Summary
Artfully restored by ArtFarm (the hospitality wing of the Hauser + Wirth Swiss art dealership), this wood-panelled and appropriately art-stuffed pub is celebrating its second year as a “quality local”; and although it’s in the beating heart of ‘Mayfair Village’, it’s not a bad value one either, with “lovely” service and “really good pub food” (even if the menu doesn’t stretch much beyond Scotch eggs, sausages, shepherd’s pie and the like). Upstairs is the Mount Street Restaurant (see also) and there are event spaces on the upper floors.
Summary
“Fantastic looking, cleaned up and with an amazing ceiling by the late Phyllida Barlow” (who completed the work shortly before she died in March 2023) – ArtFarm’s newly relaunched “posh boozer” in Mayfair has five storeys (with the Mount Street Restaurant on the first – see also – and with the upper floors dedicated to art events supporting Hauser & Wirth’s roster of artists). Aside from “loads of interesting art and a good backstory”, the traditional British grub (pint of prawns, oysters, shepherd’s pie, fish finger sarnie, Chelsea bun…) is pricey but “decent”.
Summary
The first London project for Artfarm – behind The Fife Arms in Braemar and Somerset’s Roth Bar & Grill, and now owner of Soho’s Groucho Club – this fine Victorian boozer (built in 1888) in Mayfair is set to relaunch in autumn 2022. Set over five floors, it will comprise a street-level pub, first-floor dining room (‘The Mount Street Restaurant’) and upper-floor event spaces, all showcasing artworks created by Hauser & Wirth’s roster of artists.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
