In the fair number of reports on the Fraquelli brothers’ Italian brasseries in Marylebone and Notting Hill, the range of opinion spans from “solid and reasonably priced” to “average and somewhat overpriced”. No-one suggests they are either very good or particularly terrible – “spacious”“very pleasant”“perfectly decent” are the kind of descriptions people attach. Business-wise though, they are going great guns, with backing from industry heavyweight Simon Woodroffe (founder of Yo!) and in February 2024 they successfully crowdfunded £1.2m to open a third Brasseria in late 2024, taking over the former site of the confusingly similarly-named ‘La Brasserie’ in South Kensington – which operated there under that name for 30 years – and where they now aim to ‘combine Italian flavour and style with New York service and a Parisian grand brasserie atmosphere’.

For a “solid menu, with a wide variety” of “reliable Italian” options, this duo have a broad fanclub – both the Marylebone five-year-old and its year-old Notting Hill sibling. Their ratings are undercut, though, by a feeling that they are “expensive (but isn’t everything nowadays…”), and can “lack atmosphere when they’re not busy”. Top Tip – for some folks, “the most important thing is that they welcome both families and doggies!”

“The quality and consistency of the dishes is first-class and service excellent” at the original location of this Italian duo (‘La Brasseria Milanese’), which opened in Marylebone in May 2018. A second all-day offshoot opened in Notting Hill in autumn 2021. It’s inspired little commentary as yet, but Tom Parker Bowles in The Daily Mail praised its “handsome” styling and a menu of “old-fashioned crowd pleasers and greatest hits”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
