Limited but good-all-round feedback again on this Japanese bar/restaurant in the heart of ‘Marylebone Village’. It’s not as expensive as some – as well as the à la carte menu, the ‘signature set’ is £65 per head, or there’s omakase for two to share at £95 per person.

An “upscale Japanese/fusion place”“a modern take on Nipponese cuisine in a light and airy venue in the heart of Marylebone High Street”. It scores higher this year: even those who consider it “overpriced” still say the culinary results are “very good”.

Views diverged this year on this modern Marylebone Japanese – an exponent of ‘Shun’ (meaning ‘food should only be eaten when it is at its best and at the height of its season’). Fans say it’s a “lovely” place offering “novel and delicious” flavours from its wide-ranging, funky menu (‘rock and rolls’, ‘plant-based power’, ‘raw to the core’, ‘robata’…) – sceptics say that it’s “overpriced, with miniscule portions”.

With the demise of the original Mayfair Taka, this October 2020 spin-off – on the Marylebone site of Providores (RIP) – is now the sole survivor of the duo. Amidst a scene set by low-key woody decor, it serves a more-than-just-sushi menu also incorporating Japanese-style tapas, robata dishes and mochi flatbreads.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
