Harden's says
Will this October 2021 newcomer finally dispel the curse of Holborn Town Hall? It’s a potentially magnificent site, that’s so far seen off Shanghai Blues, Burger & Lobster and most recently Gezellig (RIP). This ‘progressive Indian Restaurant' is the first London venture of entrepreneur Roop Partap Choudhary, and culinary inspiration comes from his property Hotel Noor Mahal in Karnal (north of Delhi).
Harden's survey result
Summary
Inspired by his parents’ travels with the Indian army, Roop Partap Choudhary’s extravagantly decorated restaurant has proved an unexpected hit in Holborn’s Victorian former town hall – a venue that has seen a succession of previous occupants fail. “The decor shows the owner’s love for his family heritage; the food shows the passion for true Indian cooking; the service is spectacular”. Its success has led to the late 2023 opening of a second, larger branch just off Trafalgar Square (in the former WC2 branch Jones Family Project, RIP).
Summary
“Great food, attentive service, and an overall lovely experience” are winning a small but very enthusiastic fan club for this quirky, late 2021 Indian two-year-old. Despite the interest of a historic building – Holborn’s former Town Hall – it inhabits something of a restaurant graveyard site, which has seen off numerous previous occupants (Shanghai Blues, Gezellig, Burger & Lobster). And, shortly after opening, it too was written off as a ‘Curry Catastrophe’ by the Evening Standard’s David Ellis. So kudos to owner Roop Partap Choudhary for persevering with his very personal vision for the enterprise.
Summary
Will this late 2021 newcomer finally make a go of this marvellous site in Holborn’s former Town Hall, that’s so far seen off Shanghai Blues, Burger and Lobster, and most recently Gezellig (RIP)? Dubbed a ‘Curry Catastrophe’ by the Evening Standard’s David Ellis, our feedback is a little more upbeat, but too limited for a safe rating.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
