A former bank in Didsbury doing things in the “best bistro style” – and part of Cheshire-based chef Gary Usher’s crowdfunded Elite Bistros group. Less commented-on than many in the group this year, but reporters applaud its “pitch-perfect service”, “buzzy environment” and “tasty, distinctively flavoured dishes” (including “great Sunday lunches” and early three-course set dinners for a modest £28 per person).

Star chef Gary Usher’s “busy” and accordingly loud Disbury bistro has become a staple on the ever-rising Manchester dining scene, eliciting the most feedback of the various prongs of his crowdfunded Elite Bistros chain. The reason? “Tasty”, high-quality dishes showing constant imagination, “a lovely atmosphere, and great value for money”.

Celeb restaurateur, Gary Usher’s “very reliable” Didsbury operation is nowadays the most commented-on member of his crowdfunded Elite Bistros chain, and one of Manchester’s most popular destinations. That it’s a bit “loud” is the worst charge anyone has to level at it – most reports merely praise its “brilliant” dishes, “relaxed” style and “very attentive” service. Top Menu Tip – “the custard tart is to die for”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Breakfast at Hispi was great. Will definitely go again. Full English, smoked salmon and spiced tomatoes were great value. The flat white coffee was excellent. "
