Smithfield's Grade II Listed 1858 market has been refurbished and reimagined as a food hall by the same folk behind Altrincham Market; ten food and drink stalls serve up a range of interesting fare, and there are over 500 seats.

A “lovely conversion” of the old Smithfield market, by the Altrincham Market team, has given rise to this “fabulous food hall”; it’s a “noisy, busy and fun” sort of place (“outside feels like the Meatpacking District of old”) but “if you can nab a table, watch the world go by and enjoy the great selection of food and drinks”. The latter includes nine outfits, with one reporter singling out New Wave Ramen as having “really hit their stride” (“worth going to MM for this alone”).

This grand listed Victorian building in the Northern Quarter (built in 1858) lay derelict for 20 years before being beautifully restored to host a selection of street-food stalls. For a high-quality bite, well worth a visit.

“THE place to visit in Manchester!” – a grand listed Victorian building in the Northern Quarter, once a derelict meat market, now beautifully restored to host a selection of “very high-quality” street-food stalls. There’s a “wonderful, buzzing atmosphere, and an amazing choice of food and drinks”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Perhaps unfair to review it a restaurant as its basically a restaurant hall with various options, but as a venue I like the busy communal eating and the selection of options. Won't be everyone's cup of tea....its noisy and seating can be uncomfortable....but as a casual dining venue, great"
