Harden's says

The fourth branch of this southern Italian pasta specialist – known as Sugo until early 2023 – brings it into the city centre for the first time, to Exhibition, the former Natural History Museum in Peter Street. The original in Altrincham and branches in Ancoats and Sale are popular for their hand-made pasta, signature ragu and fun atmosphere – expect more of the same.

“Seriously the best pasta (and great starters too)” can be found at this “consistently excellent” operation from brothers Mike & Alex De Martiis, who changed its name from Sugo Pasta Kitchen to Sud in early 2023 following a legal wrangle with a similarly named Glasgow outfit. “You can’t fault the food at any of the branches – the new one in Sale is our current favourite”; it follows the Altrincham original, which opened in 2015, and the follow-up in Ancoats. The brothers opened a fourth branch in August 2023 in the city centre’s Exhibition building (on the site of the 1817 Peterloo Massacre), which it shares with Basque live-fire restaurant Baratxuri and Scandi small-plates specialist OSMA.

“Simply stunning pasta” heads a menu of “absolutely delicious southern Italian food” at this Ancoats spin-off from a smaller Altrincham original – and makes “a perfect antidote to winter blues, if needed!”. Top Menu Tip – “the house sugo is to die for” (orecchiette with 8-hour beef shin, pork shoulder and nduja ragu).

The larger, warehouse-y Ancoats spin-off to the popular Altrincham original is “an exceptionally good place for dinner”, based on “the freshest, tastiest pasta you can imagine” and wine “served in delightful ceramic jugs”“great fun” by all accounts.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
