A seaside spin-off from the owners of London’s fooderati-favourite Brawn that’s now three years old; it may be “another small-plates restaurant” (this one set in a low-slung red-brick building hugging the sea wall and with a “view across the harbour back to Margate”) but it’s by no means rote, delivering delicious seafood- and vegetable-centric cooking alongside a “great wine selection that changes frequently” (plus DJ nights and other one-off happenings). Follow up a visit with a mooch round Turner Contemporary, three minutes away on foot.

In a “great location on the harbour wall”, Ed Wilson & Josie Stead’s “perfect” and “amazing” follow-up to beloved E London venue Brawn is “a fantastic addition to Margate” by all accounts; the self-styled ‘wine bar with food’ may affect a casual air (“great soundtrack” included), but the seafood and vegetable-centric food is “interesting and at times very good” indeed.

“A beautiful spot on the harbour arm in Margate” where Ed Wilson and Josie Stead (of London’s Brawn fame) opened in July 2021 and produce “simple dishes with an emphasis on good sourcing in a very friendly and laid-back atmosphere”. In February 2022, the Sunday Times’s Marina O’Loughlin paid a visit, declaring it “as invigorating as the sea air” with “a mix of serious intent on the menu and a breezy, ad hoc environment”, not to mention “insanely light Parmesan fritters”.

Summary

Ed Wilson and Josie Stead (of London’s Brawn fame) took over this small restaurant and bar overlooking the bay in July 2021 (after our survey had concluded). It features a Kent-ified version of the Brawn formula of small dishes, natural wine and music… plus coastal views.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
