Harden's survey result
Summary
“If ‘Cheers’ was a restaurant, this would be what it felt like” – a local indie (now with a marquee) that has built up a “good reputation locally”, and where Aussie owner “Dan (Bond), Charlotte and their team produce great grub” by most (if not all) accounts; however, “what really matters is the embracing atmosphere, defining the phrase ‘neighbourhood restaurant’”.
Summary
Australian Dan Bond’s unpretentious restaurant, which gained an outdoor marquee in covid times, is a real local hit; “you know everyone will like the food, you know it will be fair value” and “you know they’ll work their socks off to give you a good time”….“plus, Dan’s just a good bloke”, so “how could it not be everyone’s favourite?” Top Tip – “their occasional wine dinners are great fun too”.
Summary
“Going from strength to strength” – Australian Dan Bond runs this “delightful” restaurant, which serves an “interesting and excellently prepared” menu. “The entire staff work hard to give customers a great experience and this is one of those thoroughly well-run spots where the whole is more than the sum of the parts!”
Summary
“Probably the best food in Marlborough” – this local favourite is not exactly a newcomer, but relocated from London Road in October 2019 to bigger premises at The Crown. There’s “a choice of small dishes or full meals” and “very friendly service with Dan himself playing ‘Le Patron’”. “We had a memorable meal featuring in turn: carpaccio of beef with Parmesan ice cream, taleggio, roast quail, paella (superb match with an unexpected heavyweight Bertrand rosé), lamb moussaka and lemon polenta cake. Superb!”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Dan's at The Crown Restaurant Diner Reviews
"We drop in at Dan’s unannounced for an early supper on a grey Wednesday - the perfect antidote to a dull local meeting. My monkfish medallions are meaty and perfectly cooked. The accompanying mussel curry is hot and sweet with nasi goreng - the mussels are soft and pillowy. In this company broccoli is quite the surprise, yet brings a flash of green and a crunch to the dish. Who knows if these ingredients will ever meet again, but this is completely comforting, tasty and satisfying soul-food. My long-suffering partner chose an innocent-sounding crispy aubergine starter which fairly burst with sweet, sticky, chilli-infused flavour, then dived into iberico pork presa, a fine cut cooked pink, on a base of romesco sauce with butter beans and crunchy fresh artichoke hearts. The sauce could perhaps have been more distinct, but once again, this was a tasty dish made with excellent ingredients. All in all, delicious."
"Dan's has a good reputation locally but the food is very overrated. Good menu but the food not terribly special. Service friendly and ambiance good."
