Launched by Nigel Sutcliffe and James McLean of restaurant consultancy Truffle Hunting three years back, this bistropub and wine bar has been racking up awards ever since, with the latest laurels including bagging Estrella Damm’s ‘Newcomer of the Year’. In the kitchen, Scott Smith serves up seasonal dishes with the occasional whiff of St John (trotters and bacon plus beef dripping on toast), while Wednesday night is dedicated to steak-frites. Stop Press – as of September 2024, ‘Troublesome Lodger’ Simon Bonwick (who cooked his last service at the Dew Drop Inn in Hurley back in the summer) has set up camp upstairs for a chef’s table residency every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, plus the last Thursday lunch of the month.

This ever-gentrifying ‘bistropub and wine bar’ (their designation) was launched by Nigel Sutcliffe and James McLean, co-founders of restaurant consultancy Truffle Hunting, in 2021, and picked up a ‘Newcomer of the Year’ award from the folks at Estrella Damm. Chef Scott Smith (ex-of acclaimed haunts Arbutus and Wild Honey) oversees the carnivorous British bistro dishes and, while there’s the odd skeptical review submitted, even they acknowledge “most people seem positive as it slowly builds a reputation in the town”.

“A pub which is going upmarket in stages”, with an attractive menu of “good (but expensive) brasserie cooking”. Operated by Nigel Sutcliffe, who helped Heston B set up The Fat Duck, and chef James McLean, the venture remains “very popular” with its audience.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
