Harden's says
Chewton Glen, the luxury country house hotel tucked away in the New Forest, has opened a purpose-built cookery school. You can book here to eat, too - there's an informal dining space attached where you can watch the lessons and chefs at work. Expect more relaxed food than at the 'big house' - the menu lists wood-fired pizzas, burgers and superfood salads, as well as local seafood.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“Showing that the food doesn’t have to be fancy to be good” – fans applaud the “great menu of varied choices” in the relaxed alternative eatery of this famous country-house hotel, whose menu line-up includes posh burger and pizza options. The addition was completed a few years ago and is an attractive modern space with pitched roof, whose features include views over the kitchen gardens, an outdoor terrace and a cookery school overseen by James Martin. An “ideal venue for a special occasion – expensive, but worth it”.
Summary
“A great fun restaurant for indoor and outdoor dining” – this is the dressed down (a bit) option at this luxurious country house hotel, complete with plush banquettes, a swish outdoor terrace, cookery school and greenery-filled views over the kitchen gardens. Not all reviews are perfect, but the lowest food rating it receives is “good”.
Summary
This swanky country house destination nowadays also boasts a cookery school, and attached relaxed venue, The Kitchen, with “a great outdoor area”. Casual luxury is the order of the day here from an “eclectic menu” incorporating dishes such as Singapore chilli crab. (Though the differential is not dramatic, diner ratings are higher here than for the posher dining room in the main house.)
Summary
“I avoided the stuffier looking dining room, and went for the kitchen instead (a good choice)”, says one fan of the more relaxed option at this super-swish country house hotel: part of the cookery school. It doesn’t seem to be aiming for fireworks, rather “decent food, good value, helpful staff, and a really well-looked-after setting”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
