Le Gavroche-trained chef Dave Coulson came home to open this “firm favourite” in Jesmond, with a winningly puntastic name; the “very good” seasonal tasting menus “mostly favour grown-up tastes” – and if you want to try them for less, there’s a “great-value lunch deal called ‘2,1,2,1,2’”.

“I’ve never had a bad meal here”. Local chef Dave Coulson trained at Le Gavroche in London, and returned to open his “outstanding” Jesmond restaurant 10 years ago, steadily building its reputation ever since for “adventurous and delicious” cuisine from its seasonal tasting menus. “Dave is renowned locally and deserves national recognition”. Top Tip – lunchtime and early evening, try it out more inexpensively with the ‘2, 1, 2, 1, 2’ menu for £35 per person.

“Fantastic attention to detail and quality of cooking…”, “friendly and knowledgeable staff…”, “great-value tasting menu…” – recent converts rave about their “new favorite restaurant” at Dave Coulson’s agreeable Jesmond venture, which is nearing its tenth anniversary. Coulson trained under Michel Roux Jr and returned to his hometown to open the restaurant in 2013, mixing classic technique with local ingredients – including some foraged in nearby Jesmond Dene Park.

Dave Coulson’s “grown up” seven-year-old in Jesmond is one of the city’s best-known and best-liked addresses: “a very pleasant venture with some surprising dishes” either from the à la carte, competitively-priced prix fixe (two courses for £25) or the “fantastic seasonal tasting menu” (£80 – must be ordered in advance).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
