Harden's says
This new pub / restaurant-with-rooms from Adam Handling is aiming to be the most sustainable in the UK, with an eco-garden and orchard, solar panels and composting. "Sustainable British luxury" is the tagline; it will be run by his two chefs, Steven Kerr and Jonny McNeil, and is named after the two locations he met them in.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“A stunning tasting menu where every course offers a unique experience” wins nothing but praise this year for Adam Handling’s out-of-town operation, in a “charming converted pub in Old Windsor”, acclaimed for the “same high-quality, creative cuisine as his other ‘Frog’ restaurants” (“my favourite was brill with hispi cabbage and lobster bisque emulsion!”). There are a number of menus including an à la carte selection and one dedicated to Sunday lunch; and “at £65 per head for six courses it’s tasting menu is great value” too. In September 2023, it was crowned ‘Dining Pub of the Year’ in the Great British Pub Awards.
Summary
“Adam Handling’s menu is high on big flavours and very satisfying”, according to fans of his superior gastropub yearling, who leave “stuffed and happy”. In style, “this is at the very posh end of pub dining (though to be fair there are still stools at the bar for Old Windsor locals wanting a drink)”. “Some interesting signature courses include ‘The Mother’ with apple, dates and truffle and a supplementary course of lobster cooked in wagyu fat – it tastes decadent” and exemplifies Handling’s maximalist and luxurious culinary MO: “full of flavour, imaginative and beautifully presented”. But while nearly all reports rate the food well, ratings were not as high as last year. One or two reports jibe that “the food is not as good as the chef thinks it is” or feel that its style “sits slightly uncomfortably between high-end pub food and good restaurant standards, with rather greedy prices”. Top Tip – “the outside terrace is fun in winter or summer”.
Summary
Adam Handling’s spacious new pub / restaurant-with-rooms (complete with beer garden and large outside terrace) is aiming to be amongst the most sustainable in the UK, with an eco-garden and orchard, solar panels and composting: ‘sustainable British luxury’ is the tagline. It’s “a new favourite” for a number of reporters (as it was for Guardian critic Grace Dent, in August 2021), who acclaim “high-end pub food” that’s “beautiful both in taste and presentation” with a “superb twist on each item – whether it’s pork scratchings in paper bags, or chocolate pudding with marshmallow filling… each bite is a delight!”
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
