Harden's survey result
Summary
“Against a backdrop of wild sea views we enjoyed small plate after small plate of stunning seafood, each one different” – Nathan Outlaw’s harbourside HQ inspired a dazzling level of satisfaction this year, with all of the numerous reports we received on it acclaiming it as an “outstanding” performer and very arguably “the best seafood and fish restaurant in the UK”. “You know everything is fresh and sourced locally and this shines through with everything they serve” in dish after “fabulously creative” dish, “beautifully presented on magnificent ceramics”. Its “impeccable but super-friendly Cornish service tops off” the “exceptional” standards.
Summary
“A view over the beach on one side and into the kitchen the other helps make for a wonderful atmosphere” at Nathan Outlaw’s harbourside HQ, a short step from Outlaw’s Guest House, which now allows his diners to stay and eat with a variety of accommodation and dinner deals. It’s a case of ‘Back to the Future’ here – perhaps it should be called ‘Outlaw’s Old Road’ – because, having renamed it from ‘Restaurant Nathan Outlaw’ and simplified the menu in mid-2020 in response to Covid (doing away with the previous posher format which won him two Michelin stars) he did a 180° U-turn in September 2022, reducing the number of covers to 28 and now offering the sole option of a £175 per head, seven-course tasting menu. According to the press release ‘it’s a natural progression… to use a better array of luxurious seafood’ yada, yada, yada, but it looks for all the world like a reinstatement of a posher business as usual after the upheavals of the pandemic. We have maintained the (excellent) ratings of the previous regime, on the basis that they changed precious little after the first reformatting anyway.
Summary
In June 2020 in response to the COVID-19 downturn, Nathan Outlaw announced that he was formatting and renaming his much-acclaimed former foodie mecca, Restaurant Nathan Outlaw – no longer chasing stars or serving high-end fare, but aiming to serve good-quality fish and seafood, simply and inexpensively. Our diners “love the new approach” – “even though it’s now scaled back it still feels special”. “The food is still exceptional, but while the menu is fairly simple for a Michelin-starred restaurant, and with less ‘chef-iness’, it’s the better for it”: “fresh with amazing flavours and for less money!” “Many of the same staff have been with Nathan for years” and its “genuine Cornish service” adds to the experience. “It also has the advantage of incredible coastal views.”
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
