Breaking news
The following press release has arrived detailing the restaurant's closure in December:
MasterChef: The Professionals Winner and owner of etch. in Hove, Steven Edwards will close his restaurant at Bingham Riverhouse at the end of December as times change and Steven has new commitments.
Steven will continue his partnership with the Bingham Riverhouse by offering exclusive private dining and catering for parties from 20 to 40 guests.
Steven Edwards opened at Bingham Riverhouse in the March of 2020 just a week before lockdown as a pop-up, but was such a success that he remained at the Riverhouse for over three years; securing three AA Rosettes and earning many positive reviews during this time.
Steven says, “To have achieved three years with a project which started as a temporary residence and opened the week before the first lockdown is credit to all involved. As our businesses have naturally evolved, it feels right to now pursue our separate paths so that I can focus on my other projects. I wish the Riverhouse every success with the new restaurant and look forward to meeting guests old and new at my private dining events.”
Sama Trinder co-owner Bingham Riverhouse added, “We have loved working with Steven, his exceptional Modern British food has always been so well received. He has been a pleasure to work with, it is rare you get the combination of creative talented chef, astute entrepreneur and wonderful human all rolled into one.”
The Riverhouse restaurant will reopen in January 2024. The menu will as always be local, produce-led with the finest ingredients including sustainable fish and organic or free-range sustainably reared meat. The new Riverhouse menu will be accompanied by an affordable wine list featuring a good range of organic, English and biodynamic wines.
For Steven, this year saw him take on the restaurant at Premier League Club Brighton & Hove Albion’s new hospitality experience, the Tunnel Club where he and the team prepare seasonal snacks and a three course à la carte meal for members at each home game. At the Tunnel Club diners can watch the players enter the pitch through the restaurant’s one-sided glass wall.
Steven will continue to lead the team at etch., deliver a great experience to Tunnel Club members and with plans for new projects to be announced in 2024.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“An incredible setting overlooking The Thames at Richmond” anchors the appeal of this “relaxing and enjoyable” dining room, with terrace: part of a small boutique hotel set in gardens right by the river. The “competent and consistent” realisation of high-quality dishes wins nothing but praise for cuisine created by chef Steven Edwards (winner of Masterchef: The Professionals a decade ago), which makes it one of this swanky borough’s top culinary venues.
Summary
“Lovely views of the Thames” and “fabulous food” combine to make this Richmond boutique hotel dining room “difficult to beat”. The “exceptional tasting menu you can adapt to as many courses as you want” – from highly rated chef Steven Edwards (who owns etch in Brighton) – can be enjoyed “at a window table overlooking the river”, “on the terrace or in a garden dome”.
Summary
“A really romantic setting with stunning views over the river” – this boutique hotel dining room in Richmond features “delicious, refined dining” from chef Steven Edwards (owner of Brighton’s etch and a former winner of MasterChef: The Professionals) from Thursday dinner to Sunday lunch. It’s “pricey, but a great treat!”. A simpler menu is available for the dining room and verandah Monday-Wednesday.
Summary
“A super-pretty location” helps make the dining room of this Richmond boutique hotel – rebranded last year as the Bingham Riverhouse – “unbeatable for a special meal”. To accompany the “lovely ambience”, and “great views over the Thames”, the food is an attraction in itself: “the menu reflects the seasons well and is always delivered to a high standard”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
