This “really lovely small restaurant”, housed in interlinked Georgian shops, has “been excellent for years” owing to its “short, interesting menu” of locally sourced British food (some foraged) and its “charming and efficient service” too.

“Small and perfectly formed”, with a “short, locally sourced and interesting menu, plus a reasonable wine list” – this “lovely little bistro” is “a must for visitors to Rye” and provided a number of reporters with their best meal of the year. Top Tip – “the local Romney Marsh lamb”.

“Still excellent after 35 years and 3 different managements” – the latest chef-proprietor being Martin Peacock, who spent 27 years as a university lecturer before finding his way into a professional kitchen (more recently, he survived a serious stroke which left him unable to walk for months). He grows some of the fruit and vegetables himself, and has a sharp focus on locally caught fish, game and the uniquely flavoured Romney Marsh lamb.

Chef-proprietor Martin Peacock can be relied upon to provide “locally sourced food (including Rye Bay gurnard and Romney Marsh lamb) cooked with flair” at his small and stylish modern British bistro. A longstanding Rye favourite, fans sum it up as “fine-dining food at mid-dining prices”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
