“We go regularly and are always sated and often delighted”, say fans of the authentic Italian cooking at this stalwart on the Yorkshire coast, owned since 1997 by chef-patron Giorgio Alessio – a champion of the cuisine of his native Piedmont and the white truffles that are its crown jewels. He first talked of retiring five years ago, so don’t postpone your visit too long.

“A hidden gem with authentic Italian home cooking”, this Yorkshire stalwart provides much better cooking than one might expect of this seaside town, thanks to its careful sourcing and preparation by chef-patron Giorgio Alessio (owner since 1997) who travels regularly to Italy to buy white truffles and other ingredients. “Since 1975 we have eaten here 2-3 times a year: it has never disappointed!”.

“Still as good as ever, with fresh fish daily from the quay and a very good selection of Italian wines” – this Yorkshire institution has dazzled diners for more than 40 years and is “one of the few safe bets in Scarborough”. If you visit in season, you may be lucky enough to taste some of the white truffles Giorgio Alessio, the owner since 1998, brings back from his native Piedmont.

Giorgio Alessio’s “fantastic” outfit has long been a “beacon of light” in these parts (“excellent since our first visit… in 1975!”) – the fish is “as fresh as you can get it, collected from the harbour at dawn” and it's well worth going in season for “some dishes with truffles they bring back from visits home to Italy”. “We go every year while on holiday and I dream about the zabaglione!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
