“Always-excellent food in beautiful, quaint surroundings” has made James & Kate Mackenzie’s former coaching inn a real East Yorkshire destination for almost 20 years – “and everyone is so friendly”. There’s “no tasting menu, but with such good options amongst the selection of dishes, that makes a refreshing change”. Top Tip – with seven boutique bedrooms, it’s “a great place to stay because the breakfast is amazing: five or so choices of fish for breakfast, most places you’d be lucky to get one!”.

James and Kate Mackenzie imbue this “warm and professional” gastropub with personality and – notwithstanding an out-of-the-way location in East Yorkshire – it continues to be one of the most highly commented-on in the country. Despite its plaudits from Michelin, it has remained “realistically priced” and the menu steers a clever line between options that are ambitious enough to lift them well above the ordinary, but grounded enough not to seem fancy-schmancy: “superb dishes, all with a local accent”. In summer, “a lovely evening is boosted by the beautiful garden and terrace for drinks”. Fans say it’s “well worth the 100 mile round trip!” although there are also “delightful rooms in the gardens” where you can stay.

“A Michelin star restaurant that still serves a steak sandwich at a reasonable price!” – this “classy gastropub” is one of the most commented-on entries in our annual national diners poll, despite a “tranquil”, out-of-the-way rural location in East Yorkshire. Run since 2006 by James and Kate Mackenzie, “it still retains its ‘local pub’ feel, and – for all its foodie accolades” – remains at heart “a very romantic boozer and restaurant, with quiet corners and a lovely outdoor eating area”. On most accounts, the “superb cooking” (served in “massive portions”) and “warm professional service” add up to an experience that is nothing short of “outstanding”. A minority do leave “underwhelmed” though, and a more nuanced view is that it “charges London prices for food that is very good but not great, with service that’s friendly but can be a bit amateur”. The final verdict? “Well worth the detour!”.

“It looks like a pretty country pub, but the quality of the cooking once inside is spot-on, putting many other Michelin starred restaurants to shame” – James & Kate Mackenzie’s “classy” destination “perfectly situated, off the beaten track, deep in the countryside” of East Yorkshire is still “a ‘proper’ inn, with open fire, real ale… but also superb food!”: “not quite as inventive as some similar level establishments with exciting tasting menus, but good value and very sound”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"This restaurant is exceptional,. Beautiful country surroundings. Very friendly ……but the food is exceptional. Creative, beautifully prepared with very interesting ingredients. I had Halibut as my main course. Beautifully done with Halibut. They deserve the credits they get. The best in East Yorkshire "
