Breaking news

March 12, 2025:

A monumental chapter in British-Indian culinary history is coming to a close (that's what the PR says). “Curry Queen” Dipna Anand—cookbook author, TV chef, and restaurateur—alongside her father, the legendary Gulu Anand, has announced the closure of The Brilliant Southall on April 7th 2025.

Founded by Gulu in 1975, The Brilliant has been far more than just a restaurant. For half a century, it has been at the culinary heart of the Southall community, a place where generations have gathered to celebrate, reminisce, and savour its extraordinary Punjabi cuisine infused with unique Kenyan influences. A true culinary institution, it has set the standard for excellence, drawing food lovers from across the world—including His Majesty The King, who famously named it his favourite curry house.

The Anand family has given diners ample time to experience The Brilliant before it closes, and ensuring that its guests can say goodbye to a legend, and there will be an amazing closing night dinner on Friday 4th April at which a special set menu of Brilliant favourites including Masala Chicken, Karahi Gosht and the famous Samosa Chaat will be served. Dipna, Gulu and the Brilliant team will be welcoming guests at what has become a cornerstone of the community.  If you can’t make the dinner, there’s also a 10% discount on takeaway orders on this night.

However, in exciting news, shortly after the original location closes, Dipna will be opening a new restaurant, Brilliant Gastro, also in Southall, in mid-April. Dipna’s fresh culinary venture will be part of The Green Quarter, Berkeley's landmark regeneration project, offering an Indian gastro-style eatery combining the Anands’ Punjabi roots with modern influences and twists on Western classics – something completely different to anything else in the area.

Dipna says: “It may be the end of an era for Brilliant Southall, but after 50 years, the Brilliant brand has gained an iconic status in Indian dining, and we have to ensure that it is constantly evolving to both reflect the preferences of diners, and the food I love to eat, so there’s something delicious for everyone.”

Our reviews are based on an annual survey of ordinary diners which runs in Spring each year. But this establishment has not yet gathered enough feedback for our editors to write it up.

Do you think it deserves to be better known?

Write a quick review now using our restaurant diary service. That way it might catch our attention. Next survey, you can transfer your diary entry into our survey system. Everyone who contributes 5 or more reviews in our survey will qualify for a free guide.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
