The Orangery Restaurant also hosts afternoon teas (Thu-Sat) or you can eat more informally all day in the Lounge Bar.

A “smart hotel” with its own lake set in the Staffs countryside, where the “cosy restaurant serves good value food using local produce”. Tuesday night is grill night – on other evenings steaks and pub classics feature on the menu alongside somewhat fancier fare.

A “lovely setting” elevates this 600-year-old moated dining room overlooking a canal, part of a small hotel run by Chris Lewis and family since the 1950s. “Great service” abets “imaginative menus” which, despite the odd caveat, generally hit the spot.

A 600-year-old moated building with a dining room “overlooking a canal and the moat” creates a “superb setting” at this “lovely” small hotel (owned by Chris Smith and his family since 1955), whose staff “really look after you”. The odd “decidedly average” meal led to rather middling ratings, but some reporters consider this “the best dining experience in Central Staffs”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"An excellent stopover as near M6 but in a peaceful village. A busy hotel and the bar/restaurant is popular locally. At lunch, there were only a few tables occupied but the others were laid up apparently for tea which is a bi deal here. They stated to arrive at 2.15 pm before we had finished lunch! You need to book tea but not lunch. Food has really improved since our last visit, Excellent pea soup, sorry velouté, sea trout pricey but tasty. "
