Harden's survey result
Summary
“This is a real oddity” – “a micro-restaurant in trendy hipster Stirchley run by a charming couple” in a “tiny cafe converted into a Chinese part of the time” (Thursday & Friday) by chef James Kirk-Gould and his partner Cassie, inspired by their time in Beijing. There’s a “lovely squashy buzz” and some “delicious, excellent food with fresh ingredients and good spicing” (if from a menu that “offers very little choice”). Top Menu Tip – “the crispy fried chilli chicken is a treat”.
Summary
It looks unpromising – derelict even – on the outside, but this quirky venue from chef James Kirk-Gould and his partner Cassie caught attention in April 2022, when Jay Rayner of The Observer decided to give it a review. At the weekends, it’s all about waffles and fudge sauce (Cassie has a fudge business), but Wednesday to Friday it serves up “thrilling dishes paying homage to their time together in China” making this, says Jay, a “brilliant-cut-gem of a place”, with dishes rarely costing over £9.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
