On the River Tas, this 700-year-old mill was once home to the business that became Colman’s Mustard and has been run by Ludo and Andy Rudd since 2013. We had good, if slightly guarded reviews about its longstanding restaurant, but none of its new, more exciting offshoot – Store – which opened in 2021 and where Hazel Yuill and Liam Nichols won a Michelin star in early 2023 for their seven-course tasting menu at £110 per person (hence we’ve left it unrated).

“A bit quirky, but it has a lot class as well” – this scenic, 700-year-old mill on the River Tas was once home to the business that became Colman’s Mustard, and since 2013 under Ludo and Andy Rudd has been restored to be a restaurant of some ambition. There is an à la carte menu, or go the whole hog and have the 7-course tasting menu for £75. Top Menu Tip – “the best Sunday lunch for miles”.

“A very professional operation, run to a high standards” – this picturesque, converted old mill on the River Tas (dating from 700 years ago) was once home to the business that became Colman’s Mustard. “A very good option for a fine Sunday lunch at a fair price”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Owner's description

For 700 hundred years there has been a Mill of one kind or another across the River Tas at Stoke Holy Cross

The Restaurant has recently undergone major refurbishment with attention to detail retaining the full character of the building.

In 1814 Jeremiah & James Colman moved into the Mill starting the production of Mustard, which today is famous all over the world. When the business outgrew the mill, COLMANS moved to Carrow where they still thrive today.
