A couple of miles from the entrance to Dartmoor National Park, John & Emma Hooker’s attractive coaching inn is no stranger to awards lists, currently ranking at number two on Estrella Damm’s Top 50 Gastropubs list. You’re “always guaranteed an absolute corker of a meal” (British, unpretentious, but “lavished with care”), and a “fab atmosphere” too – no wonder reporters just “love it here”.

John Hooker and wife Emma’s “lovely pub” en route to Cornwall was praised this year for some “really clever cooking without being fussy or complicated” (including “good venison from local stalkers”). Despite the “exciting things happening in the kitchen” of late, it has reassuringly “not lost its ‘pubbiness’”.

Chef-patron John Hooker and his wife Emma celebrate their 10th anniversary this year at this old coaching inn on the road to Cornwall (hence the name). Marks are down this year, with a couple of disappointing reports. Perhaps it’s just a blip because there is still plenty of enthusiasm for “John’s delightful, unfussy cooking”, which fans say “stays just on the right side of good value”.

“I’ve had far less pleasure for far more dough” – chef-patron John Hooker’s cooking is “dangerously delicious” at the “lovely” old pub with rooms he and his wife Emma have transformed over the past decade.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
