Harden's survey result
Summary
A gloriously situated old watermill set on twelve acres strewn with weeping willows plays host to this venture, juggling a more formal upstairs dining room and casual outdoor hangout Tipi on the Stream, for cocktails and seafood. Chef-owner Lee Bye’s seasonal field-to-fork food is “done to perfection” (with one reporter preferring the à la carte to the tasting menu) and if you want to overnight, the rooms are “fantastic” too.
Summary
This “lovely renovated” watermill, in “pleasant grounds with a mill pond”, makes a great setting for chef-patron Lee Bye’s cooking, which is showcased in “two different restaurants” – the more formal “upstairs room, which is great for dinner”, and the “Tipi on the Stream, a fantastic casual outdoor eatery” which wows all comers with its cocktails and seafood. Either way, “service is personal, friendly and attentive” and the food “excellent and reasonably priced”.
Summary
Limited but very enthusiastic feedback this year regarding Lee Bye’s oak-beamed dining room inside a 250-year-old watermill, which recently expanded with the acquisition of adjoining property. In October 2021 its restaurant was recognised by the AA as one of the country’s best (promoted to a very-hard-to-win four rosettes), but our most enthusiastic feedback this year related to its “lovely tipi out by the mill pond... more casual dining”.
Summary
Beautiful oak-beamed dining room in a “very well-preserved” eighteenth-century building – a watermill until its conversion into a boutique hotel almost 50 years ago. Chef Lee Bye’s menu is “not huge” but results are often highly rated. Persistent gripes about “sloppy service”, though, suggest that “staff need more training”. Top Tip: “afternoon tea is always a treat, especially in the summer when you sit outside overlooking the large pond”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
