New York, London, Doha… Whitchurch – that’s been the progression for Stuart Collins and wife Frances, who started this slightly unlikely venue five years ago, bringing a level of culinary ambition that was previously unknown to this corner of the Shropshire/Cheshire borders. Helped by a star turn from Stuart on Great British Menu a couple of years ago, it continues to attract some “outstanding all round” reviews for its 9-course tasting menu (at £85 per person).

“A great experience in a town not noted for gastronomy… if you can book a table.” Stuart & Frances Collins’s modest four-year-old in this north Shropshire market town is now booked-out for months ahead following Stuart’s star appearances on last year’s Great British Menu. Word was already out (certainly amongst our surveyors) about his modern British tasting menu – he held leading roles under Michael Caines and Gordon Ramsay and was an executive chef in Doha before he and Jenny, who runs the front-of-house operation, decided it was time to launch here.

“What a revelation!”“a quality addition to the (fairly sparse) North Shropshire dining scene in fairly simple premises on the high street” – Stuart & Frances Collins’s modern British venture wins nothing but high praise for its “outstanding food”, with the option of an “absolutely fantastic, six-course tasting menu for £45”. “A must!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"This will be my second visit to Dockett and I was not disappointed. There's a lovely feeling of 'being at home' in this restaurant. Fran is amazing on front of house, as are her team. Stuarts food didn't disappoint especially as he accommodated my gluten free request. There was no bread course at all, even for my partner who isn't gluten free, we missed this element but absolutely loved the rest of it. We will be back."
