Burgers, Etc Restaurants in Buckhurst Hill
1. Opera Tavern
Spanish restaurant in Covent Garden
23 Catherine Street - WC2
“An enjoyable tapas-style menu in Covent Garden” is served at this two-floor venue near the Royal Opera House: a lively spot “with quite a lot of its former pub architecture retained”. Part of the Salt Yard Group, Hispanic flavours are to the fore here as well as some Italian inspirations. Top Menu Tips – “the broccoli and courgette tempura are two standout dishes”; “pan con tomate is particularly good”; “good orange panna cotta with matching ice cream”.
2. Patty and Bun
Burgers, etc restaurant in Hackney
2 Arthaus Building, 205 Richmond Road - E8
“Messy, filling and tasty” – this 14-year-old indie outfit is “one of the best burger groups in London”, with seven outlets in the capital and one in Brighton. It was acquired last year by a new company, headed by original founder Joe Grossman. Top Menu Tip – “the Ari Gold cheeseburger is best”.
3. Burger & Beyond
Burgers, etc restaurant in Hackney
147 Shoreditch High Street - E1
“Juicy fabulousness” sums up the appeal of this fast-food trio (in Shoreditch, Soho and Borough Yards), whose ‘Beyond’ menu extends to fish ’n’ chips tacos and native-breed steaks from independent farmers who use regenerative farming methods. “Grateful to B & B for a non-‘smashed’ version of a burger that can be cooked to order”.
4. Burger & Lobster
Burgers, etc restaurant in Canary Wharf
18 Hertsmere Road - E14
Founded in 2011 by four friends, this interesting concept hit ten sites in London in April 2025 with its debut in Kensington (replacing Street Burger on the high street) and also has a Brighton outpost as well as a handful of footholds in the Middle East and Asia. Fans are still in the majority and say its posh comfort food (the clue is in the name) is “a surprisingly good offering”. But while there are few harsh criticisms, its ratings have over the years slipped to a level that’s only “OK”.
5. MEATLiquor Islington
Burgers, etc restaurant in Islington
133b Upper St - N1
“When you want a hipster burger dripping in your beard, this place delivers!” – Scott Collins’s “buzzy, vibey” joints are notorious for their “really good dirty burgers” with memorable names (the ‘Dead Hippie’ and its veggie cousin the ‘Tempeh Tantrum’), plus “excellent buffalo wings with blue-cheese sauce”. In early 2025 he opened spinoff venture BLOODsports in a Covent Garden basement (see also), showing live sports and horror films on large-screen TVs.
6. MEATliquor Shoreditch
Burgers, etc restaurant in Shoreditch
14-15 Hoxton Market - N1

7. Black Bear Burger
Burgers, etc restaurant in Hackney
Boxpark Shoreditch, 2-10 Bethnal Green Road - E1
“Best burger for me”, declare fans of this independent group that started out 10 years ago with a stall on Broadway Market and a focus on grass-fed, dry-aged British beef – and the judges at the 2025 National Burger Awards share the view, crowning Black Bear’s Miso Bacon Burger as ‘Burger of the Year’. “Their seeded buns and wings are pretty good too”. The name refers to founders Stu & Liz Down’s working holidays in the Canadian Rockies. In April 2025, they opened their largest outlet yet, with 100 covers, at Westfield White City.
8. Halo Burger
Burgers, etc restaurant in Hackney
105 Great Eastern Street - EC2A
2023 Review: For a meat-free burger, this tiny brand (the first vegan restaurant in Europe to use ‘Beyond Meat’ in its patties) is well worth a try if you need a bite near the Old Street roundabout, or are down Pop Brixton way.
9. The Rib Man
Burgers, etc restaurant in Shoreditch
Brick Lane, Brick Lane Market - E1
“Legend!” – East Ender Mark Gevaux has earned cult status for the BBQ ribs and pork rolls he sells at Brick Lane’s Sunday market, along with his signature ‘Holy Fuck’ and ‘Christ On A Bike’ hot sauces to spice them up. The queues are long and he sells out quickly – but these days you can buy his cooked ribs (and the sauces) online.
10. Hawksmoor
Steaks & grills restaurant in Shoreditch
157 Commercial St - E1
“Best steakhouse in London? Yes. Best in the world? Could be!” – Childhood mates Will Beckett & Huw Gott have successfully surfed the zeitgeist for twenty years, since they opened their first venue near Spitalfields in 2006. Now they have 13 as far afield as Chicago, and a still significant stake in a private equity-backed steak empire valued as high as £100m (a price bandied around when it seems they were looking for buyers in late 2024). The group is a particular favourite for a generation of thirtysomething or fortysomething Londoners for whom it’s been a treasured part of their culinary journey. Its City, West End and (floating!) Canary Wharf outlets are also a big and enduring hit for business wining and dining. “Prime cuts of matured beef” are “perfectly cooked” and “served in striking surroundings with a carefully curated wine list”. Amongst the huge volume of feedback the brand inspires, there are inevitably some dud reports, but more eyecatching is the consistency of praise it still achieves. There is a widespread feeling, though – has been for years – that even if “the quality is up to scratch”, “sheesh it’s expensive”, with prices verging on “silly” (“although the excellent cocktails help numb the pain when the bill comes!”). Top Tip – “Set lunch on a Monday when you can BYO wine for £5 represents excellent value”; dip your toe in the water with an “unbeatable breakfast” (“although you have to have a big appetite to handle the full version”).
11. Bleecker Burger
Burgers, etc restaurant in Spitalfields
Unit B Pavilion Building, Spitalfields Mkt - E1
“Just simple and exceptional!” – Zan Kaufman’s fast-expanding chain still remains widely hailed for offering “the best burger in London”: a winning formula that’s bringing an eighth site in Soho in 2025 alongside recent additions in Seven Dials, London Bridge and – the biggest one yet (28 covers) – on Baker Street. All of the many reports we receive acclaim its “amazing burgers and amazing fries”. One caveat – “expect delays if you want to eat in the evening at the Bloomberg building outlet as they can be too busy fulfilling the constant Deliveroo orders for the starving investment bankers who are all still working until midnight!”
12. Goodman
Steaks & grills restaurant in Canary Wharf
3 South Quay - E14
“Consistently a top steak restaurant for business across London – and still retaining that title”, say fans of the NYC-style steakhouses founded by Misha Zelman, Ilya Demichev & George Bukhov-Weinstein in 2008. The outfit has moved with the times, replacing their famous Josper grills with more sustainable Mibrasas from Spain, which they reckon get even better results from their 30-day dry-aged beef from the Lake District and Nebraska. There’s also a “really great wine selection, if a little expensive”. That they are “pricey” has always been a concern here, though, and ratings continue to decline, no longer giving Hawksmoor a run for their money as once they did (and the Canary Wharf branch closed down after 11 years in June 2025).
13. The Duck Truck
Burgers, etc restaurant in Spitalfields
Bishops Square - E1
2024 Review: “This truck at Spitalfields continues to be a favourite of everyone I take there” – parked just outside the market, it delivers generous filled buns of the eponymous roasted bird, or boxes with meat, chips and salad.
14. Patty and Bun
Burgers, etc restaurant in City
22-23 Liverpool St - EC2
“Messy, filling and tasty” – this 14-year-old indie outfit is “one of the best burger groups in London”, with seven outlets in the capital and one in Brighton. It was acquired last year by a new company, headed by original founder Joe Grossman. Top Menu Tip – “the Ari Gold cheeseburger is best”.
15. Cut + Grind
Burgers, etc restaurant in King's Cross
The Urbanest Building, 25-27 Canal Reach - N1C
2022 Review: “Brilliant burgers charmingly served in a student-friendly hang-out” – that’s the deal at this indie four-year-old, which is located at the northern end of the new developments near King’s Cross.
16. Burger & Lobster
Burgers, etc restaurant in
52 Threadneedle Street - EC2R
Founded in 2011 by four friends, this interesting concept hit ten sites in London in April 2025 with its debut in Kensington (replacing Street Burger on the high street) and also has a Brighton outpost as well as a handful of footholds in the Middle East and Asia. Fans are still in the majority and say its posh comfort food (the clue is in the name) is “a surprisingly good offering”. But while there are few harsh criticisms, its ratings have over the years slipped to a level that’s only “OK”.
17. Hawksmoor Guildhall
Steaks & grills restaurant in City
10-12 Basinghall St - EC2
“Best steakhouse in London? Yes. Best in the world? Could be!” – Childhood mates Will Beckett & Huw Gott have successfully surfed the zeitgeist for twenty years, since they opened their first venue near Spitalfields in 2006. Now they have 13 as far afield as Chicago, and a still significant stake in a private equity-backed steak empire valued as high as £100m (a price bandied around when it seems they were looking for buyers in late 2024). 18. Bodean’s
American restaurant in City
16 Byward St - EC3
Can the arrival of Richard Turner – Meatopia founder and consultant to Hawksmoor, Blacklock and Pitt Cue – help turn around this sagging chain of US smokehouses, launched in 2002 and with 6-7 outlets at its height? His new menu was launched in March 2025 across the remaining Soho, Covent Garden, Camden Town (an all-day diner) and Tower Hill branches, with the focus on US-scale platters of ribs, pulled pork and other meaty cuts.
19. Goodman City
Steaks & grills restaurant in City
11 Old Jewry - EC2
“Consistently a top steak restaurant for business across London – and still retaining that title”, say fans of the NYC-style steakhouses founded by Misha Zelman, Ilya Demichev & George Bukhov-Weinstein in 2008. The outfit has moved with the times, replacing their famous Josper grills with more sustainable Mibrasas from Spain, which they reckon get even better results from their 30-day dry-aged beef from the Lake District and Nebraska. 20. Smiths of Smithfield, Dining Room
Steaks & grills restaurant in Clerkenwell
67-77 Charterhouse St - EC1
Now branded as ‘No.3 Rooftop Restaurant’ (formerly, it was just ambiguously referred to as the top floor) – Smiths’ flagship venue was once a top spot for business wining and dining thanks to its wide outside terrace and striking views over to the City and St Paul’s. Ups and downs over many years have lowered its profile, but no-one rates the food badly nowadays, even if some think elements of the experience are “overpriced” or “disappointing”. With the rebrand has come less emphasis on steak, and a sign-of-the-times refocus on fish and seafood (including a raw selection), but still alongside cuts of dry-aged, grass-fed British beef.
