2. Obicà Mozzarella Bar, Pizza e Cucina
Italian restaurant in Soho
19-20 Poland St - W1
“Surprisingly decent Italian fare… proper (and huge) pizza and pasta and, if you have room, pleasing puddings” carves an ongoing niche for these smartly decorated outposts of an international Italian chain (started in 2004), where – as the name hints – many dishes feature Mozzarella di Bufala.
3. Radio Alice
Pizza restaurant in
16 Hoxton Square - N1
Our mission: make delicious pizza, served with care, in beautiful spaces. In the beginning we were just Matteo and Salvatore, two brothers from Calabria. We moved to Bologna to study economics, and – like all penniless students – ate a lot of...
4. Zia Lucia
Pizza restaurant in Brent
Boxpark Wembley, 18 Olympic Way - HA9
“Lush pizza” that’s reliably “top-quality” has driven the expansion of this Islington-based group that has developed four different 48-hour ferment bases – including gluten-free and ‘black vegetable charcoal’ versions to reduce stomach gas; so “everyone’s happy”. The eight-year-old group now has nine sites in the capital (including a new one labelled as ‘Chelsea’ but on Fulham Broadway) and one in Reading.
5. Santa Maria
Pizza restaurant in Ealing
11 Bond Street - W5
“The pizza is second to none”, combining “top-quality ingredients and fabulous bases” at this quartet of “bustling” pizzerias founded 15 years ago by Neapolitan-born Angelo and Pasquale. Since launching in Ealing, they have expanded slowly to Fulham, Islington and Fitzrovia – and the extent to which they’ve maintained their ratings is an achievement for an expanding group.
6. L' Antica Pizzeria
Pizza restaurant in Hampstead
66 Heath St - NW3
2021 Review: “A Hampstead institution”, this “small” Neapolitan with a “classic, buzzy-pizzeria ambience” is “the real deal and excellent value” – so it’s “always packed, especially at weekends (when you can’t reserve)”. There’s also a range of appetizers and pasta dishes, and a spin-off branch in New Barnet.
7. Sacro Cuore
Pizza restaurant in Kensal Rise
45 Chamberlayne Rd - NW10
2024 Review: “Top Neapolitan pizza”, say fans of this Kensal Rise 11-year-old and its Crouch End offshoot, which offers a “limited and delicious menu (they stick to what they know) in cool surroundings”.
8. Oro Di Napoli
Pizza restaurant in Ealing
6 The Quadrant, Little Ealing Lane - W5
“Worth a detour” – “some of the best pizza outside Italy” is found at this “excellent Neapolitan pizzeria”, “run by an Italian family in an unlikely suburban location” in Ealing. “The barman makes a mean negroni to get the evening off to a great start”.
9. Osteria Basilico
Italian restaurant in Notting Hill
29 Kensington Park Rd - W11
This “old-school” Notting Hill Italian has been “a great crowd-pleaser for the whole family” for more than 30 years. According to one local: “you will not have a great meal but on the other hand I’ve never had a bad one” – as a result it can be “extremely busy, but the service is great” and keeps on top of things. Essenza and Mediterraneo in the same street (see also) are its younger stablemates.
10. Pizza Pilgrims
Pizza restaurant in Hammersmith and Fulham
The Balcony, Westfield - W12
“More hit ’n’ miss than they used to be, but still a go-to chain” – the Elliot brothers’ successful group is heading towards 20 branches in the capital, but “still producing quality dishes despite becoming quite a brand”: “lovely scorched, pillowy-based pizzas with plenty of power in the ingredients” and “reasonably priced for the quality!” Latest to launch, in June 2024, was a branch by Euston.
11. The Oak W2
Italian restaurant in Bayswater
137 Westbourne Park Rd - W2
“Thin and crispy pizza with coarse semolina in the base” is the main focus at this smart Notting Hill pub conversion, where “the tapas-style starters and excellent pizzas are rather more interesting than the main-course choices”. The Oak W12 near Ravenscourt Park and the Bird in Hand at Brook Green operate on similar lines.
12. Sacro Cuore
Pizza restaurant in
10 Crouch End Hill - N8
2024 Review: “Top Neapolitan pizza”, say fans of this Kensal Rise 11-year-old and its Crouch End offshoot, which offers a “limited and delicious menu (they stick to what they know) in cool surroundings”.
13. The Oak W12
Italian restaurant in Shepherd's Bush
243 Goldhawk Rd - W12
“Thin and crispy pizza with coarse semolina in the base” is the main focus at this smart Notting Hill pub conversion, where “the tapas-style starters and excellent pizzas are rather more interesting than the main-course choices”. The Oak W12 near Ravenscourt Park and the Bird in Hand at Brook Green operate on similar lines.
14. Tarantella Ristorante Pizzeria
Italian restaurant in
4 Elliot Rd - W4
2022 Review: A “lovely local” near Turnham Green, this “family-owned Italian” is “tiny but with terrific food and atmosphere”. There’s a good range of pizzas but the Puglian dishes are what makes it special.
15. The Hawk's Nest
Pizza restaurant in Shepherd's Bush
Goldhawk Rd, Shepherd's Bush Market - W12
2022 Review: With its foliage, fairy lights and heaters, this September 2020 newcomer – where tables are predominantly outside – injects a festive spark into a quirky space, next to Shepherd’s Bush market and the Goldhawk Road tube bridge (opposite the station). Founders Will Fuller of Soho House Group and Frazer Timmerman of Incipio Group aimed, apparently, to import a bit of East London groove to this converted railway arch and adjoining large yard, and judging by it being permanently packed they’ve succeeded! Pizza is the menu mainstay and staff try hard. A 120-seater, it’s also available for events.
16. East West
Pizza restaurant in Tufnell Park
135 Fortess Road - NW5
2022 Review: Adding Indian spicing to pasta and crispy Italian pizza explains the name of Devinder Singh’s Tufnell Park venue, which opened in Spring 2020. Early bird feedback suggests it's a concept that ‘has legs’.
17. Base Face Pizza
Pizza restaurant in Hammersmith and Fulham
300 King Street - W6
“The slow-rise sourdough bases are like nothing ever tasted before” – this “small and friendly” three-year-old Hammersmith independent now has spinoffs in Barnes and Putney, and serves “unusual and unusually good pizza”. Founder Tim Thornton is a jazz bassist whose lockdown project – baking pizzas to raise funds for the NHS – took over his life. “I went all the way to Naples and had what was supposed to be ‘the best pizza in town’, and I’m not sure it was any better than at Base Face!”
18. Portobello Ristorante Pizzeria
Italian restaurant in Notting Hill
7 Ladbroke Road - W11
“Very good pizzas” are the pick of the broad Italian menu (also with seafood on display) at this Notting Hill Gate fixture, where the best seats in summer are on the large outside terrace. With a “great family atmosphere”, it’s “very much a local restaurant, and all the better for that!”.
19. Rossopomodoro
Pizza restaurant in Camden Town
10 Jamestown Rd - NW1
2021 Review: “Neapolitan influences are evident in the choice of ingredients, and the wood-burning oven makes for good, chewy, charred crusts, unlike most high-street pizzas” – so say fans of this global chain, whose HQ is indeed in Naples. Not everyone is impressed, though, and ratings are dragged down by those who feel it’s merely an “everyday” choice: “OK for a bog-standard group, but not great”.
20. The Bird in Hand
Pizza restaurant in West Kensington
88 Masbro Road - W14
2024 Review: “Great food and drink, especially pizza” makes it worth remembering this stylish (if sometimes noisy) Olympia pub-conversion, a few minutes’ walk from Brook Green (part of the Oak group).
