Featured Clevedon Restaurants
1. Home at Penarth
British, Modern restaurant in Penarth
1 Royal Buildings, Stanwell Road - CF64
“An exceptional experience, with excellent food, outstanding wines and professional service, but all done in a friendly way” – James Sommerin and family continue to inspire high praise for this small and highly personal venue (at which he quickly reclaimed his Michelin star after the forced closure of a former starred venue on the Penarth seafront in 2020) and where he cooks with his daughter Georgia in an open kitchen, with wife Louise and daughters Angharad and Cath also working in the business. “James has always produced top-class food and this is certainly true of this latest venture”.
2. Clifton Sausage
British, Modern restaurant in Bristol
7 Portland St - BS8
“Working well as a straightforward venue with good fare” – the clue is in the name at Simon & Joy Quarrie’s stalwart fixture, which is now over twenty years old.
3. Gem 42
Italian restaurant in Newport
42 Bridge Street - NP20
“How this business survives in Newport is unbelievable! It’s far too good!” – twin brothers Sergio and Pasquale Cinotti (the latter the pastry chef) established this brave destination in 2018, and – some would say against all odds – continue to go from strength to strength (in 2022 they were the AA’s Welsh Restaurant of the Year). For the full blow-out, you can opt for a ten-course ‘Essenza’ menu which changes daily at £180 per head; but there are much more affordable ‘entry-level’ options, ranging from £65 per head.
4. Puro By Tommy Thorn
British, Modern restaurant in Clevedon
Rear of 32 - 34 Hill Road - BS21
PURO Restaurant & Bar is a modern venue for relaxed, yet sophisticated, eating and drinking. All our food is fresh, with a focus on well sourced ingredients, providing simple but quality, seasonal food. In addition to the food menu is a carefully selected wine list (...
5. Harbour House
British, Traditional restaurant in Bristol
The Grove, Harbourside - BS1
“Really a little gem in Bristol”: the former Severnshed has morphed, post-pandemic, into an “amazing place that has bags of character and history”, being set in a boatshed designed by Clifton Suspension Bridge engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (and also hosting a well-known eatery with a River Café chef in the ‘90s, and an exhibition by Banksy in 2000). Too limited feedback for a rating, but reports say Ross Gibbens now turns out “really competent food using SW ingredients priced sensibly” (and with a particular nod to St Mawes seafood); minor quibble: “the interior is a bit of a barn so wait for good weather and get a table on the terrace”. Need more convincing? Jay Rayner called it “a delightful place to be” in a 2022 review.
6. BANK
International restaurant in Bristol
107 Wells Road - BS4
Limited but positive feedback, including from a London-based reporter, on this revamped former branch of Lloyds in Totterdown, which opened in 2021 and relaunched in spring 2023 with a menu based around open-fire cooking.
7. The Granary & The Granary Club
British, Modern restaurant in Bristol city centre
32 Welsh Back - BS1
The Granary is a buzzy, neighbourhood all-day eatery near Queen Square in central Bristol, with a great vibe and striking interiors and has been featured in The Telegraph, The Times & Condé Traveler.Think unique, period windows flooding the space with light, ...
8. The Ethicurean
British, Traditional restaurant in Wrington
Barley Wood Walled Garden, Long Lane - BS40
2023 Review: “Kind of a romantic and fantastic Scandi-Bristolian take on dining!” – “You’d have to go a long way to replicate this really original experience”, where you eat in the “special location of a marvellous Victorian walled garden with lovely views (of the Mendips)”. There’s a “very individual” menu prepared by head chef Mark McCabe with 14 courses for £150 per person: “just superbly executed, if expensive”.
9. The Ivy Clifton Brasserie
British, Traditional restaurant in Bristol
42-44 Caledonia Place - BS8
Thoroughly at home in Bristol’s smartest village, the first branch outside London of Richard Caring’s national chain is “a very good place to go for a relaxed business lunch” or similar occasion on smart, neutral ground – the food doesn’t inspire much in the way of feedback either good or bad.
10. Bar 44
Spanish restaurant in Bristol
18 - 20 Regent Street - BS8
2021 Review: “Proper jamon, a good selection of small plates, and an excellent Spanish wine list with a wide range of good sherries” – “a great drinks list with something for everyone” – help inspire positive reviews on this Hispanic yearling – “a great new addition to Bristol” and the first English branch of a small minichain originating near Cardiff.
11. The Pony
British, Modern restaurant in Bristol
291 North Street - BS3
2022 Review: The team from the former Pony & Trap in Chew Magna – nowadays The Pony Chew Valley – opened for the first time in Bristol with this new venture in May 2021 (rather late in the day to inspire survey feedback). The menu features dishes cooked over open fire from chef Hugo Harvey. But the ‘bistro’ appellation seems a bit of a misnomer, as the only evening option (there is a cut-down lunch alternative) is a 4-course menu and you need to pay up-front if you book in advance (which is the presumption).
12. Souk Kitchen
Middle Eastern restaurant in Bristol
277 North St - BS3
2021 Review: “Vibrant stuff!” – the Lovells’ “buzzy” Middle Eastern venue (there’s also a sibling in Clifton) turns out an impeccable array of shakshuka, mezze and hummus and is particularly of note for its “very enjoyable brunch”; a location opposite the Tobacco Factory makes it ideal for pre-theatre dining.
13. Sonny Stores
British, Modern restaurant in Bristol
47 Raleigh Road - BS3
This “delightful genuine neighbourhood restaurant” on a quiet street corner in Southville is “almost perfect – unpretentious, effortless and with sublime food and drinks”. Launched after lockdown, it serves a “delicious Italian-inspired menu” from chef-owner Pegs Quinn, who spent four years at the famous River Café, while his wife Mary Glynn ensures a “friendly and welcoming service, so it’s like being a guest in someone’s home”. “The room is nothing to speak of but that doesn’t matter as it’s about the conviviality and the awesome cooking”.
14. Spiny Lobster
Fish & seafood restaurant in Bristol
128-130 Whiteladies Road - BS8
“Small, friendly, super fish” – the MO of Mitch Tonks’s longtime Bristol outpost, the former Rockfish Grill, which is “slightly old-fashioned” (a “proper restaurant with proper tablecloths”) but whose “beautifully fresh” catch, shipped in daily from Cornwall, makes it “so good” by absolutely all accounts.
15. Lido
Mediterranean restaurant in Bristol
Oakfield Place - BS8
It’s “slightly surreal watching swimmers while eating a selection of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern tapas” at this restored Grade II-listed mid-Victorian swimming pool in Clifton, which offers a “warm welcome and some very accommodating touches”. “Great breakfasts and small plates” are available poolside and fuller meals served upstairs, with windows overlooking the pool. “Overall it’s pleasant but not perhaps memorable”.
16. The Vincent Kitchen
British, Modern restaurant in Bristol
Queen Victoria House, Redland Hill - BS6
2022 Review: “Recently opened of all places in a retirement village” – a modern development of 64 apartments in Redland – “but open to the public”: this September 2020 newcomer is run by local caterers CleverChefs and occupies a light-filled space with open kitchen overlooking an arboretum garden. Open from breakfast and throughout the day, it wins strong early feedback for “assured cooking at reasonable prices”.
17. Bravas
Mediterranean restaurant in Bristol
7 Cotham Hill - BS6
2023 Review: Well known down Brizzle way, this small (16 seats) tapas haunt has an outsized reputation for its authentic approach. Our feedback is limited, but it’s a favourite for one or two of our reporters who award it very high marks. It’s part of a local group, and its siblings include Cargo Cantina and Gambas.
18. Little French
French restaurant in Bristol
2b North View, Westbury Park - BS6
It’s “hard to get a table in this tiny French bistro” in Westbury Park (one of the most commented-on destinations in Bristol this year), where locally born “chef Freddie Bird’s classics with a twist” make an “outstanding addition to the Bristol scene”, with “proper gutsy French cooking, and delicious to boot”. Top Menu Tip – “the pommes aligot alone is worth the trip, absolutely delicious and indulgent”.
19. Prego
Italian restaurant in Bristol
7 North View - BS6
2022 Review: This much-loved neighbourhood restaurant on the border between Westbury Park and Henleaze recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, with the founders having come a long way since their days as floorlayers; their “very pleasant” Italian food can now also be consumed on the heated, covered and fairy-lit terrace spawned during Covid times.
20. Wilks
British, Modern restaurant in Bristol
1 Chandos Rd - BS6
2020 Review: “Elegant and imaginative cuisine” and an excellent standard of service again won nothing but rave reviews for James Wilkins & Christine Vayssade’s small restaurant in a Redland sidestreet, whose ambiance was “greatly improved” a couple of years ago “with a new feature street-art wall and intimate décor”. But in October 2019, the pair put it up for sale in order to pursue an opportunity overseas: hence we’ve removed the rating for now.
