British, Modern Restaurants in Essex
1. The Three Hills, Bartlow
British, Modern restaurant in Bartlow
Dean Road - CB21
“A great gastropub in a lovely setting” – this 17th-century building (converted to a pub in 1847) sits about half an hour’s drive outside Cambridge and offers a superior pub menu in its orangery dining room, bar and outside terrace. And if you stay, there’s an “excellent breakfast” too.
2. The Bell Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Horndon on the Hill
High Rd - SS17
Occupying a 15th-century coaching inn with two proper bars and a dedicated restaurant, this “old favourite” has been run by the same family for over 75 years and is “still very good” by all accounts, having helped pioneer the gastroboozer movement back in the 1980s. “Great quality food” of a local and seasonal stripe (venison, lamb, and veggie Wellingtons) and a proper pub vibe make it a real “family favourite”.
3. The Square and Compasses
British, Traditional restaurant in Fairstead
Fuller Street - CM3
“Reliable British dishes with a supporting cast of the usual pub grub suspects” inspire continued high ratings from fans of this 17th-century village inn, which is a stop-off point on the Essex Way long-distance footpath.
4. The Windmill Chatham Green
British, Modern restaurant in Little Waltham
Chatham Green - CM3
Tom Clarke, ex-of Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir, and L’Ortolan in Reading (where he met partner Nancy Witte), is behind this “unique, intimate and personable restaurant” in a “beautiful setting situated in the small hamlet of Chatham Green”. A diminutive pub with a distinct dining area, the venue turns out “decorative plates that are full of flavour”, including a tasting menu which “takes you on a gastronomical journey where every mouthful is a joy”.
5. Pig & Whistle Restaurant
British, Modern restaurant in Chelmsford
Chignal Road, Chignal Smealy - CM1
2024 Review: In a village a short drive outside Chelmsford, this converted sixteenth-century pub has fine countryside views and provides a traditionally comfortable destination, complete with linen tablecloths, candles and cut glass. It wins good all-round feedback (if not a huge volume of reviews) and its modern brasserie fare (with steak, beef Wellington and cote de boeuf to share a highlight) helps it regularly feature in Essex food awards. (Owners Brendan Curran & Justin Mullender are also known for the quality of their put-downs on Tripadvisor!)
6. The Cuckoo
British, Modern restaurant in Radley Green
2023 Review: “A good-to-find culinary outpost in an area with few interesting eating spots” – this “welcoming” gastropub is well worth remembering: “a steady hand in the kitchen meets good ingredients, and if food and wine both tread a relatively safe path, it’s no less enjoyable for that”.
7. Smith’s Brasserie
British, Modern restaurant in Ongar
Fyfield Rd - CM5
“A favourite restaurant of all time!” – this “very consistent” Essex institution first opened in 1958 and its performance over many years has earnt it a special place in the hearts of its dedicated fan club (which includes Rod Stewart, the Beckhams and other TOWIE notables). “The food is always to a very high standard with the best seafood” – “it can feel very crowded but the fish is always well cooked”.
8. The Magic Mushroom
British, Modern restaurant in Billericay
Barleylands Road - CM11
2022 Review: Darren Bennett’s stalwart, serving up creative modern British cooking (including a well-regarded afternoon tea) “continues to be reliable in all respects”, whether you stop to take advantage of the set menus or its popular side act as a wedding and events venue.
9. Alec's
British, Modern restaurant in Brentwood
Navestock Side - CM14
2024 Review: “In the heart of Essex, this fabulous fish restaurant” (est. 2010, and revolving around the “plush conversion of an old pub”) “offers amazing dishes and attentive service in a truly beautiful setting”. “It can be fun watching the TOWIE types amongst fellow diners”, but if that loses its appeal, divert your eyes to the “pleasant views from the terrace on a sunny day”.
10. The Cricketers
British, Modern restaurant in Clavering
Wicken Rd - CB11
2022 Review: Jamie Oliver’s parents Trevor & Sally retired from this sixteenth-century village gastropub after 44 years in November 2020, so it has recently changed hands: it’s now a part of the 12-strong Chestnut group of pubs. The Olivers always ran the Cricketers well, but regulars say “(even in the tepee) the food is possibly up a notch”.
11. The Fox And Hounds Restaurant & Bar
French restaurant in Hunsdon
2 High Street - SG12
After working alongside Gary Rhodes and serving as Head Chef at Tom Conran’s Notting Hill venue The Cow, chef James Rix launched this smart Home Counties pub (replete with a large beer garden and heated gazebo) together with wife Bianca in 2004. Its rustic Italian- and French-inspired cuisine attracts reviews ranging from “good quality” to “excellent” – with meat (including Josper-grilled steak) a standout, and starters and desserts that are “not too shabby” either.
12. Food Leigh on Sea
British, Modern restaurant in Leigh-on-Sea
92 Leigh Road - SS9
John Lawson’s ‘no menu’ outfit (there’s always a meat course and a fish course, with veggie alternatives) “has moved away from a vegan format to a healthy-living offering” – meaning gluten-free and dairy-free, “so you don’t come away bloated and filled to the gills with butter and salt”. Everything is locally sourced and super-fresh, resulting in “superbly put-together meals that change regularly”: Michel Roux is a big fan.
13. The George
British, Modern restaurant in Cavendish
The Green - CO10
Village pub near Sudbury relaunched in 2023 after an arty makeover of the interior, with “excellent, unusual burgers” – “some of the best around” – from a trio of friends who developed their ‘Divine’ burger menu at The Vine in Great Bardfield, Essex. They also serve a Yorkshire pudding ‘wrap’ filled with roast beef and pickles.
14. The Pipe of Port
British, Traditional restaurant in Southend-on-Sea
84 High St - SS1
2024 Review: Sawdust floors and shelves of wine for sale add to the atmosphere of this ‘Wine Merchant & Dining Rooms’ – a Dickensian-style space that’s been a linchpin of the town’s eateries since 1976. It continues to win consistent support for its traditional fare, and is well-suited to business lunches.
15. The Crown
British, Modern restaurant in Stoke-by-Nayland
Park Street - CO6
2023 Review: In the heart of Constable Country, this gastropub with rooms is “a busy venue with a good atmosphere and friendly service”. Foodwise, it’s praised for cooking that’s “outstanding” at the “very reasonable price”; and wine lovers are well-catered for too, with 250 bins (they also run their own merchants).
16. The Angel Inn
British, Traditional restaurant in Stoke-by-Nayland
Polstead St - CO6
This “very popular gastropub/hotel in a pretty village” was taken over and lavishly revamped by new owners a few years ago, and “the conversion of an old building is very well done (down to the super WCs!)”, making it a most “attractive” spot for a meal. Chef Matthew Hurry oversees the French-ish cooking, which ranges from fish Fridays to “outstanding” desserts. Reflecting comments in previous surveys, there was praise this year for the “very reasonably priced set menu – £26 for two courses, £34 for three – considering the quality”.
17. The Hoop
British, Modern restaurant in Stock
High Street - CM4
2024 Review: This “lovely old Essex pub” with a white wooden facade serves food that is “well above average for pub grub” – and its popularity means it “gets overcrowded and noisy” at times. Originally three weavers’ cottages from 1460, the building was converted two centuries later using beams salvaged from naval vessels docked at Tilbury. Top Menu Tip – “the skate wing is delicious”.
18. Kintsu
British, Modern restaurant in Colchester
11a North Hill - CO1
Surprise! Paul Wendholt announced the closure of his tiny operation ‘in the heart of Colchester town centre in the shadow of a multi storey car park’, only in August to dub 2025 ‘The Year of the U-Turn’ with reopening announced in September. The format is little-changed: there’s a full seven-course tasting menu for £90 per person, with a short one for £65 available all week except Saturday evenings. Our diners will be pleased: they say, “this restaurant has had a consistently high standard since it first opened in 2016 as Grain. Their tasting menu is delicious from course to course with lovely combinations of flavours. Service is friendly and knowledgeable”.
