Featured Fairford Restaurants
1. Minster Mill
British, Modern restaurant in Minster Lovell
Old Minster - OX29
2023 Review: Limited but good all-round feedback on this handsome hotel on the fringe of the Cotswolds and a short drive from Oxford (part of Andrew Brownsword’s luxurious group), whose beautiful terrace borders the banks of the River Windrush. In the beamed, pitched-roof dining room, chef Joshua Brimmell holds a hard-to-win three AA rosettes.
2. The Old Crown Coaching Inn
restaurant in Faringdon
25 market place - SN7
Elegant, quirky and serving exquisite food alongside a beautifully renovated 4 star hotel. Escape the fast pace of everyday life with a visit to The Old Crown Coaching Inn. Located in the centre of the historic market town of Faringdon, seize the opportunity to sink into a relaxi...
3. Ox Barn at Thyme
British, Modern restaurant in Southrop
Southrop Manor Estate - GL7
This five-year-old venue set in a huge stone-built former barn – part of a sprawling family-run project in the Cotswolds also incorporating a spa retreat, a pub and a beauty business – serves “reliably good food. Nothing fancy, just great local ingredients cooked to perfection. Yum”. Chef Charlie Hibbert trained under Jeremy Lee at Quo Vadis; his mother Caryn led the redevelopment of the estate. Top Tip – “if you have a meal here, make time to walk around the grounds and take in the great views”.
4. Barnsley House
British, Modern restaurant in Barnsley
2021 Review: Owned by the same folk as The Village Pub, just across the road, this “very fancy” boutique hotel turns out “solid cooking with bold flavours”, and uses “a lot of produce straight from the garden”.
5. The Village Pub
International restaurant in Barnsley
Opening June 2024, in the Cotswold village of Barnsley, the first pub from the shabby-chic Pig hotel group, which has taken over boutique hotel Barnsley House across the road (also opening summer 2024). The food is a pubby version of the Pig formula, with a hearty menu based around locally sourced ingredients, served in rustic comfort.
6. The Five Alls
British, Modern restaurant in Lechlade
Filkins - GL7
2021 Review: “A real pleasure” – takeover by a chain (Cardiff’s Barkby Group, at the helm as of 2018) hasn’t led to a fall in fortunes for this eighteenth century village boozer; it continues to deliver “very enjoyable”, “well-sized and well-priced” grub (including the “perfect Sunday roast”) that’s “worth travelling some way for” – and, while it “gets pretty packed, it appears the kitchen is used to that and copes admirably”.
7. The Bell
British, Modern restaurant in Langford
Main Street - GL7
This “lovely cosy country pub” (with rooms) is the brainchild of born-and-bred Cotswold gents Peter Creed and Tom Noest, who reopened its doors back in 2017. The “really nice menu includes wood-fired pizzas and flatbreads” plus hearty British pies and unusual meat dishes; if you’re the sporting type, they advertise packages including a range of activities (game shooting, deer-stalking and other very English pursuits).
8. The Bell Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Langford
A “beautiful village pub (with rooms) in the Cotswolds” that’s often “packed to the rafters”; local boys Peter Creed and Tom Noest took it over in 2017 – with the latter turning out “all the modern pub classics delivered with panache, along with some more unusual offerings” (“venison scrumpets”, anyone?); add in “smiling service”, and a beer garden overlooking the open countryside, and it’s an “outstanding” proposition all-round.
9. MBB Brasserie
British, Modern restaurant in Cirencester
The Cornhall 26 Market Pl - GL7
2023 Review: “Excellent food” and a “lively atmosphere” can be found at this brasserie set in the Corn Hall covered market in the centre of town, that has developed over 15 years from a deli and was formerly known as Made by Bob… although the founder is James Parkinson.
10. Wheatsheaf Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Northleach
West End - GL54
2022 Review: Superdry sartorial star Julian Dunkerton, behind the Lucky Onion Cotswold group, owns this “reliable and buzzing” country hotel, where “amazing local ingredients” are “beautifully cooked in a gorgeous setting”. The odd service blip but it's “overall a very memorable eating experience”.
11. The Swan Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Burford
Swinbrook - OX18
2023 Review: “High-quality pub food” and a “lovely setting by the river” earn high ratings across the board for this traditional Cotswolds inn. “On a brilliant sunny bank holiday Saturday, The Swan was rammed but the amazing staff never missed a beat – the chef & kitchen churned out really delicious food, and nobody was less than delighted with their choices”. Top Tip – “the sticky toffee reaches new heights of orgasmic satisfaction”.
12. The Bell at Sapperton
British, Modern restaurant in Sapperton
2021 Review: A “charming, lovely and well-run village pub” that “has had its ups and downs, but seems to be on an ‘up’ at the moment”; and serving an “interesting but not over-ambitious menu”.
13. The Feathered Nest Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Nether Westcote
“In a beautiful Cotswold village with stunning views” (over the Evenlode valley), this converted malthouse has won renown for its “exciting” cuisine over the years, and you can eat here à la carte or go for the six-course tasting menu, which comes in at £85 per person. (Reports were fractionally more up-and-down this year, perhaps reflecting the switchover of chefs, with Renemar Pinedo taking over from Matt Weedon in early 2024).
14. Mollie’s Motel & Diner
American restaurant in Buckland
Shivenham Road - SN7
2022 Review: Soho House’s relatively new motel concept (which now also has a sibling in Bristol) aims at the affordable staycation market and incorporates a modern take on the classic US diner into its offering, complete with retro Americana and brunch-friendly dishes. Too few reports for a rating as yet, but the odd bit of feedback about “great burgers”.
15. The Potting Shed
British, Traditional restaurant in Crudwell
The St - SN16
This “cosy” beamed village pub (fka the Plough) is these days “rather trendy”, with a “classy, comfortable atmosphere” and a “varied and interesting” menu plus an “outstanding Sunday lunch”. William & Kate were apparently regular visitors leading up to their engagement.
16. The Slaughters Manor House
British, Modern restaurant in Lower Slaughter
Copsehill Rd - GL54
This archetypal Cotswolds manor house, just outside Bourton on the Water, occupies a seventeenth century property that’s nowadays part of Andrew Brownsword’s hotel group. The cuisine – under chef Nik Chappell – wins a consistent thumbs-up (“we do enjoy going here... results can be a bit hit and miss, but are mostly good! while service is very good and the dining room attractive”). As well as a fairly pricey à la carte (three courses for £80) there’s a relatively affordable all-day menu served in the bar and lounges (with dishes such as omelette Arnold Bennett, steak, posh sarnies, and so on).
17. Lords of the Manor
British, Modern restaurant in Upper Slaughter
Stow-on-the-Wold - GL54
This “beautiful” honey-coloured Cotswolds country hotel with grand gardens dates back to 1649 and is a regular fixture on round-ups of romantic UK getaways. On the food front, there are two options: fine-diner Atrium, offering a “flawless” tasting menu (one sitting only at 18.45), and more casual spot The Dining Room, where reporters “could not fault the quality of the food” (and where, profiting from the hotel’s canine-friendly ethos, you can “eat with our dog at dinner and breakfast”).
18. Atrium at Lords of the Manor
British, Modern restaurant in Upper Slaughter
Stow-on-the-Wold - GL54
2022 Review: Limited but upbeat feedback on this relatively recent (2019) addition to the well-known Cotswolds manor house, with Charles Smith delivering a nine-course tasting menu for £95. Fans do say it’s “wonderful”, but we have to leave a rating till we have a few more reports.
19. Jolly Nice Farm Shop
British, Traditional restaurant in Frampton Mansell
The Old White Horse Filling Station, Cirencester Road - GL6
Founded in 2013, this farmshop meets café and drive-thru on the site of a former petrol station is a multi-tasking sort of place that makes a “great option for breakfast” or “excellent rare-breed burgers” – even if, for the fancier fare, “one pays accordingly”. Alongside the bar/dining tent, there’s plenty of outdoor seating in the meadows and a fire pit for cooler days – plus a whole gamut of events ranging from breathwork classes to folk nights and puppy meet-ups.
20. The Swan Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Ascott-under-Wychwood
4 Shipton Road - OX7
2021 Review: The co-founders of group that owns The Chequers in the Cotswolds and The Talbot in North Yorkshire have added another historic venue to their collection – a 16th century inn, complete with a 100-cover dining room and seven guest bedrooms. No survey feedback as yet, but press reviews are very upbeat.
